Description
Add some variety and a little fun to the traditional violin recital. The Fiddlin' for Fun Functionally books introduce students to the "fiddling" style by taking the beginning violinist through different modifications of several pieces. Students learn about chord structures, bowing techniques, and rhythmic and harmonic variations while having a great time playing familiar tunes. The books are designed so that the student can be accompanied by a teacher, a pianist, or both. The teacher edition is for the violin teacher who cannot accompany the student on the violin without a written part. Having the Teacher's Edition allows the violinist teacher to play along with lessons much like a traditional fiddle teacher would. An accompaniment CD recorded by Alice Joy Lewis is also available. Contents are: Irish Washerwoman * Boil 'Em Cabbage Down * Rubber Dolly * Old Joe Clark * Goofus * Cindy * Fiddlin' Around * Amazing Grace * Liberty * Westphalia Waltz.

More about this title

Why we love this

This collection breaks the recital monotony by giving violinists permission to play outside the classical box. The progression through variations on each tune teaches chord awareness and stylistic flexibility in a way that feels like discovery rather than drill, and students stay engaged because they recognize the melodies.

What to expect

Lighthearted and inviting. These familiar tunes carry a playful energy that makes the violin feel accessible and fun rather than precious. The progressions from simple melody to embellished variation give each tune room to breathe and grow.

Who it's for

Beginning violinists (typically Suzuki Book 1-3 level) who need to expand beyond traditional classical repertoire and discover that violin has life outside the concert hall. Teachers looking to inject joy into lessons while sneaking in real harmonic and rhythmic literacy.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the recorded accompaniment to establish the groove and lock in the rhythmic feel before adding any bowing variations.
  • Pay attention to the harmonic variations listed in each piece; they're the bridge between classical bowing and true fiddling feel.
  • Record yourself playing through a piece at different variation levels so students can hear their own progression and build confidence in the style shift.
  • Encourage students to listen closely to how the accompanist handles phrasing and articulation, since fiddling relies more on intuitive response than written dynamics.

How to use it

Feature one tune on a casual recital or studio class to show families that young violinists can command styles beyond Suzuki books. These pieces also work well as warm-ups or unit studies that break up the standard method book routine without derailing progress.

  • Bowing variation and stylistic flexibility
  • Rhythmic ornamentation and syncopation
