About the Composer: John Kinyon

John Kinyon

John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, then later received an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in South Carolina. His career spans instrumental music direction, music department leadership in public schools, educational administration at Warner Brothers Music in New York, and music education faculty work at the University of Miami.

Since 1982, Kinyon has focused on composing educational band music from his home in Tuckasegee, North Carolina. His catalog exceeds 250 published works for Alfred, spanning grades 1 through 3 across marches, ballads, overtures, and arrangements in diverse stylistic idioms.

Why we love this

Grade 1 rarely sounds this charming. Kinyon writes with genuine melodic appeal and orchestral color that keeps audiences engaged while respecting what beginning band musicians can actually execute. The Irish clogging tune sits naturally in young hands and ears, offering the rare combination of technical restraint with genuine musical substance.

What to expect

Buoyant and infectious. The clogging tune pulses with a folk rhythm that invites physical response while remaining firmly rooted in concert band idiom. You'll hear genuine joy in the playing when this one clicks.

Who it's for

Beginning concert bands looking for repertoire that entertains audiences without insulting younger musicians' musicality. Directors programming community concerts or festival selections need accessible material with genuine character; this delivers both.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the melody breathe in the woodwind voicings. Young players often rush ornamental passages; anchor their tempo with a clear preparatory gesture.
  • Balance the instrumentation so the Irish character emerges. The tune's folk origins will shine if you resist over-blending and allow individual sections their natural color.
  • Build the rhythmic energy incrementally across the arrangement rather than locking into one tempo from the start. This creates the illusion of a living, dancing tune.

How to use it

Slot this early in a concert where you need energy and audience connection without technical demands on your young ensemble. It pairs well alongside other Grade 1 selections that explore world music traditions, establishing cultural breadth while building band confidence.

Skills your students will build

  • Melodic phrasing in simple duple meter
  • Ensemble balance across wind sections
  • Rhythmic independence in parts supporting a primary tune
  • Ornamentation and articulation at beginner tempo
