About the Composer: Christopher Goldston

Christopher Goldston

Christopher Goldston earned his Master of Music in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University and his Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. He has shaped music education through faculty positions at Columbia College Chicago, Roosevelt University, and Sherwood Conservatory of Music, while maintaining both a private studio and virtual teaching practice in Chicago.

Goldston's contributions to music education extend well beyond the classroom. His compositional work earned the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Award from the National Federation of Music Clubs in 1991 for his piece Night Train. Since 2010, he has served as national coordinator for the MTNA Composition Competition, and his leadership roles have included presidency of both the Illinois State Music Teachers Association and the Chicago Area Music Teachers Association. The MTNA Foundation named him a Fellow in 2020, recognizing his sustained impact on the profession.

Why we love this

Goldston understands exactly what early elementary pianists need: clear patterns that build confidence without overwhelming the hand. Each piece serves a teaching purpose while remaining genuinely musical, so students experience success and satisfaction rather than mere finger drills.

What to expect

Straightforward and encouraging. The music stays grounded in familiar territory, allowing young players to focus on how their hands feel on the keys and what different touches produce, rather than worrying about reading unfamiliar patterns.

Who it's for

Early elementary pianists who are solidifying their hand position and reading skills. These pieces work equally well for students in traditional lessons and group piano settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the dynamic range within Middle C position by having students play the same pattern at different volumes, listening for control and tone quality.
  • Assign the teacher duets immediately; they transform solo practice into a collaborative experience and help students internalize steady tempo.
  • Before memorization, have students identify the keyboard patterns they see repeated across measures, then label them in their score.

How to use it

Perfect for student recitals in the first year or two of piano study. You can feature multiple pieces from the collection on a single program, building a mini-recital that demonstrates growth and variety without requiring advanced technique.

Skills your students will build

  • Secure hand position and finger independence in Middle C position
  • Distinction between touches (staccato, legato, and normal articulation)
  • Memorization through pattern recognition
  • Duet playing and rhythmic coordination with a partner
  • Basic dynamic control and tone production
  • Keyboard geography without stretching beyond comfortable hand span
