About the Composer: Tyler S. Grant

Tyler S. Grant

Tyler S. Grant has built a prolific career as a composer and arranger whose works appear regularly on honor ensemble programs and repertoire lists nationwide. His compositions have won recognition through competitions like the Dallas Wind Symphony's 2014 Fanfare Competition, and his pieces have been performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Meyerson Symphony Center. Grant has accepted commissions consistently since 2010, producing new works for bands and orchestras annually.

Beyond composition, Grant maintains an active schedule as a clinician and conductor, having worked with over 100 school instrumental programs across more than 15 states and conducted at prestigious venues including The Midwest Clinic and all-state bands throughout the region. A University of Alabama graduate with a degree in instrumental music education, he credits his mentor Brian Balmages with shaping his development as a composer. Grant has also contributed to Alfred Music's Sound Innovations series and shared insights through interviews in School Band & Orchestra Magazine and The Instrumentalist.

Why we love this

Grant delivers genuine musicality and dramatic impact without exceeding the technical grasp of Grade 2 ensembles. The piece opens a concert with unmistakable confidence and energy while remaining genuinely enjoyable to teach and conduct. Its accessible orchestration means you're not simplifying a complex idea; instead, you're getting writing that was conceived to shine at this level.

What to expect

Fanfare for the Gold radiates celebration and sparkle from its first note. The combination of accessible yet colorful harmonies and rhythmic drive creates a sense of occasion without pretense, making it feel like a natural gateway into a concert program.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 2 level looking for a genuinely engaging opener that builds ensemble confidence and audience enthusiasm. Directors seeking repertoire that delivers impact without requiring advanced technique or excessive rehearsal time will find this piece highly effective.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a clear, confident tempo from the downbeat. The fanfare's impact depends on rhythmic precision and forward motion from the opening gesture.
  • Balance the harmonic colors by allowing each section its moment. Even at this level, Grant's textures reward careful voice leading and attention to blend.
  • Use the recorded performance as a reference for style and energy, but conduct with conviction. Your interpretation will shape how the band owns the excitement.

How to use it

Program this as your opening piece to set an energetic, celebratory tone that immediately engages your audience. It works equally well as a festival or contest selection, where its confident character and clean execution showcase band fundamentals.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision and ensemble coordination in a driven fanfare idiom
  • Dynamic control and sectional balance across the full band
  • Stylistic confidence in performing with character and musicality
  • Intonation stability under the demands of sustained harmonic color
