About the Composer: Erik Morales

Erik Morales

Erik Morales built a prolific composing career by bridging the gap between artistic ambition and practical music education. Born in New York City in 1966, he began arranging for his high school marching band in south Florida and never stopped. His formal training at Florida International University and the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, gave him the tools to work across classical, jazz, and commercial genres. Today, with over 150 published works, his compositions for wind ensembles, orchestras, jazz groups, and chamber settings have been performed worldwide and regularly commissioned by schools and organizations.

Morales has earned particular recognition for his trumpet writing. His trumpet ensemble works have placed at the 2006 and 2008 National Trumpet Competitions, and his Concerto for Two Trumpets premiered at the 2013 International Trumpet Guild conference. In 2016, he was inducted into the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education's Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to creating music that challenges students artistically while remaining accessible to performers at growing levels of skill.

Why we love this

Morales crafts memorable themes that stick with students long after rehearsal ends, paired with driving rhythmic energy that keeps the ensemble engaged. The cinematic scope and dramatic darkness give Grade 3 bands genuine narrative weight without sacrificing accessibility, making this an ideal choice for groups ready to step beyond basic concert fare. It programs beautifully as a contest selection or festival centerpiece where you want to showcase musicality and ensemble control.

What to expect

Fable unfolds like an epic film score condensed into concert band colors. Broad, sweeping melodies emerge against a backdrop of rhythmic energy and harmonic intrigue, creating an atmosphere that feels both dark and captivating. The listener is pulled forward by momentum while remaining curious about what comes next.

Who it's for

Grade 3 concert bands ready to tackle repertoire with real dramatic arc and compositional sophistication. Directors seeking a piece that challenges musicianship while remaining within technical reach will find solid material here, and students respond to the cinematic scope and storytelling inherent in the work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the broad themes with dynamic commitment. These melodies deserve the kind of phrasing and breath that make them sing, not just play.
  • Lock in the rhythmic pulse early. The energy driving this work depends on precise rhythm section articulation and steady forward momentum.
  • Balance the veil of darkness with clarity. Let the intrigue breathe through deliberate texture rather than muddy dynamics.
  • Mark entrances crisply. When thematic material passes between sections, clean attacks help the listener track the narrative arc.

How to use it

Program Fable as a festival or contest selection where your band can demonstrate musicianship and control over extended, lyrical material. It pairs well with lighter fare on a concert, offering dramatic contrast and showcasing the ensemble's ability to sustain atmosphere and build narrative tension.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining long melodic lines with consistent tone and phrasing
  • Rhythmic precision in mixed meters and syncopated passages
  • Dynamic shaping and contrast to support harmonic vocabulary
  • Ensemble balance when thematic material passes between sections
  • Stamina and focus across an extended concert work
