About the Composer: Jack Wilds

Jack Wilds

Jack Wilds composes for ensembles across the full spectrum of musical experience, from children's choirs through professional chamber groups. His compositions integrate influences from visual art, literature, and philosophical texts alongside purely musical thinking, resulting in work that meets performers at their current level while pushing toward genuine artistry. Chamber ensembles including the Attacca Quartet, members of the New York Philharmonic, and the Atlanta Symphony have performed his music, and his compositions appear on festival required repertoire lists across multiple continents.

Widls teaches composition, theory, ear training, and music technology at Texas State University and serves as Co-Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in San Marcos, a role he has maintained for 13 years. A former public school band director himself, he has published over 40 works for developing musicians and maintains an active schedule as clinician and adjudicator. His study with Michael Ippolito, Chris Trapani, and Donald Grantham informs his approach to writing for young ensembles that demands and rewards serious musicianship.

Why we love this

Exuberant Awakening delivers exactly what a Grade 3 ensemble needs for a festival opener: transparency that lets developing musicians hear themselves, orchestrational color that rewards careful part playing, and infectious energy that audiences recognize immediately. The propulsive ostinatos anchor the ensemble while soaring melodies give your strongest players something compelling to voice, making this work equally effective for building confidence across a mixed ability band.

What to expect

Exuberant Awakening radiates joy from the opening gesture. Momentum propels forward through interlocking rhythmic patterns while bright melodic lines soar overhead, creating a sense of collective uplift and celebration that feels both earned and genuine.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 3 level, particularly ensembles preparing for festival competition or seeking an energetic opener that builds ensemble cohesion. The accessibility of the writing makes this suitable for developing musicians while the musical content satisfies both performers and adjudicators.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the ostinatos early in sectionals. The rhythmic foundation carries the entire piece, so rhythm section and low woodwinds should rehearse these patterns independently before adding melody lines.
  • Bring out the soaring melodies by balancing accompaniment parts down slightly. Ask players in supporting roles to listen toward the lead voice and match that musical line's phrasing.
  • Shape the orchestrational flourishes with attention to articulation and dynamic contour. The excitement emerges from clarity, not volume, so precision in these moments creates the flashy effect Wilds composed.
  • Take the tempo steadily and trust the buoyancy of the writing. The propulsive character builds naturally when rhythms stay locked; resist the urge to push.

How to use it

Program this as an opening number to capture attention and establish energy at the start of a concert or festival set. The compact two-minute-forty-five-second duration makes it ideal for pairing with a longer feature work, or it can anchor a smaller concert devoted to contemporary band music.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady ostinatos under lyrical material
  • Balancing accompaniment textures with leading melodic voices
  • Executing articulate orchestrational figures with precision
  • Playing with stylistic consistency across disparate rhythmic patterns
  • Responding to dynamic and phrase contour in contemporary harmonic language
