Description
The Bruce Broughton Solo Series features solos by one of the country's most outstanding composers of concert and film music. This new series by seven-time Emmy award winning composer features music that is notable for its wonderfully rich harmonies, flowing melodies and rhythmic vitality. These pieces are ideal for recitals and contests and are great teaching pieces that are appealing to performers and audiences alike. The demanding trumpet work EXCURSIONS, originally written with band accompaniment on a commission by the United States Air Force Band (and recorded by that band on the album, "Excursions") is here offered for solo trumpet with piano accompaniment. In the aptly named work, Mr. Broughton explores the diverse technical and expressive capabilities of the trumpet, with the angular melodies and driving rhythms that characterize the piece used by the solo trumpet to lead the accompaniment.

About the Composer: Bruce Broughton

Bruce Broughton

Bruce Broughton has composed for some of Hollywood's most recognizable films, including Silverado, Tombstone, The Rescuers Down Under, and the Homeward Bound series. His television work spans decades, from classic series like Hawaii Five-O and Dallas to acclaimed modern shows including Seth MacFarlane's The Orville and Steven Spielberg's Tiny Toon Adventures. He has received ten Emmy Awards and nominations for an Oscar and Grammy.

Beyond film and television, Broughton maintains an active concert music practice, with orchestral and chamber works performed by ensembles such as the Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He serves as a Board member of ASCAP and has held leadership positions in both the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is a past president and founding member of The Society of Composers and Lyricists.

Why we love this

Broughton's background scoring major motion pictures shines through in the melodic sweep and harmonic sophistication of this work. The arrangement for trumpet and piano preserves the piece's dramatic character while creating an intimate setting perfect for both recital hall and competition stage, giving advanced trumpeters a showcase that demands real musicianship rather than mere technical display.

What to expect

Excursions explores the trumpet's full sonic range with angular, driving melodic gestures that alternate between assertive and introspective moments. Broughton's rich harmonic language creates an orchestral sense of color and depth despite the piano accompaniment, giving the piece the dramatic scope of his film work while maintaining intimate chamber music textures.

Who it's for

Advanced high school trumpeters and college-level players preparing for recitals, competitions, or auditions will find a substantial work that demands secure technique and musical maturity. This piece suits performers ready to tackle contemporary concert writing and those seeking a vehicle that showcases both virtuosity and interpretive depth.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the angular melodic lines with clear phrase architecture; resist the urge to play them as purely technical passages. Let the contour of each phrase guide your dynamic and articulation choices.
  • Balance the dialogue between trumpet and piano as a genuine conversation. The accompaniment carries substantial musical weight, so listen actively and respond to harmonic and rhythmic cues from your collaborator.
  • Maintain rhythmic drive through the piece without sacrificing lyrical moments. Broughton's harmonies reward a slightly generous approach to rubato, particularly at phrase endings.

How to use it

Feature this work on a solo recital as a centerpiece, pairing it with Baroque or Romantic repertoire to highlight its modern compositional language. It works equally well in a competition setting or as a showcase piece for advanced students during studio recitals, where audiences will appreciate both the technical brilliance and the sophisticated musical writing.

Skills your students will build

  • Angular melodic reading and phrasing in contemporary idiom
  • Sustained control through extended technical passages
  • Harmonic awareness and responsiveness to piano accompaniment
  • Dynamic range and tone color variation across the trumpet's full register
  • Rhythmic precision in driving, syncopated material
