About the Arranger: Kenon D. Renfrow

Kenon D. Renfrow

Dr. Kenon D. Renfrow serves as coordinator of group piano at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he is a member of the piano faculty. He earned his Ph.D in Music Education with an emphasis in keyboard pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma, and previously held the position of Professor of Keyboard Performance and Director of Keyboard Pedagogy at the University of Miami, where he founded a preparatory piano program for pre-college students.

Renfrow has established himself as a specialist in the intersection of music technology and keyboard education. His work includes professional recordings on the Yamaha Disklavier, integration of Clavinova digital pianos into group piano instruction, creation of MIDI accompaniment materials, and co-authorship of Alfred's Group Piano Course. His ongoing research focuses on the pedagogical applications of MIDI, computer technology, and digital keyboard systems in music learning.

Why we love this

These arrangements strike a careful balance between accessibility and musical substance. Each piece maintains harmonic and melodic integrity while remaining playable at the advanced level, making them ideal for pianists who want to perform meaningful worship music without technical barriers overshadowing the spiritual content. The included performance times help with concert planning and give students clear structural landmarks.

What to expect

These arrangements radiate quiet confidence and emotional depth. The writing moves fluidly between moments of intimate tenderness and fuller, more affirmative sections that celebrate the strength of these familiar hymns. Each piece invites contemplation while never losing sight of the joy inherent in its spiritual subject matter.

Who it's for

Advanced pianists looking for contemporary Christian music that serves both worship contexts and recital settings. This collection suits church musicians, private studio students preparing for sacred performance, and pianists who want to expand their repertoire with well-crafted arrangements that honor the texts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the harmonic textures so accompaniment figures support rather than overwhelm the primary melodic line, especially in passages where the arrangement layers multiple concurrent elements.
  • Shape phrases through subtle dynamic gradation rather than dramatic contrasts; these pieces benefit from a sustained sense of spiritual introspection across longer musical statements.
  • Attend to the liturgical or devotional context of each text; let the emotional weight of the lyrics inform your interpretive choices at the keyboard, including tempo flexibility and touch quality.

How to use it

Feature individual selections in church services, contemporary worship settings, or piano recitals that blend sacred and secular material. The collection works equally well as a resource for developing an independent worship piano repertoire or as a programming tool for a broader sacred music concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Voice leading in contemporary harmonic settings
  • Sustained legato singing on the keyboard through complex chord changes
  • Balancing accompaniment figures with melodic prominence
  • Interpreting rubato and phrasing in devotional contexts
  • Registering dynamic layers across the full keyboard
