Description
Nowegian composer Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) composed his ENTRY MARCH OF THE BOYARS in 1893, and it remains his most popular work. Following an offer of a post at the Bucharest Conservatory (which he declined), Halvorsen became very interested in the city. Reading about the 18th century entry of the Romanian boyars into Bucharest, he felt "forced" to write a piece of music about it. Initially used as stage music in 1893 at the Bergen theatre where he was director of music, Halvorsen later arranged it for orchestra. Instrumentation: 1+1(Picc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Perc(2-3): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Reprint edition.

More about this title

About the Composer: Johan Halvorsen

Johan Halvorsen (1864–1935) was a Norwegian composer, violinist, and conductor whose orchestral works bridged Romantic nationalism and cosmopolitan concert traditions. Born in Drammen, he studied violin in Stockholm and later became concertmaster and director of music at the Bergen Theatre, a position that shaped both his compositional voice and his deep engagement with dramatic storytelling through instrumental music.

Halvorsen's catalog ranges from virtuosic violin works to large-scale orchestral pieces, but his reputation rests primarily on his gift for writing memorable, accessible marches and character pieces. His ability to capture vivid narrative content without program notes—evident in Entry March of the Boyars—made him a favorite among conductors of his era and secured his place in the Scandinavian orchestral repertoire.

Why we love this

This march delivers the narrative satisfaction of stage music without needing a stage. The orchestration is imaginative and transparent enough for student orchestras yet sophisticated enough to hold mature audiences; the piece builds genuine momentum rather than relying on bombast, making it an ideal opener that sets a spirited tone without exhausting your ensemble.

What to expect

The piece evokes pageantry and ceremonial procession with unmistakable grandeur, yet avoids the heaviness of much Romantic-era marching music. There's an almost cinematic quality to the way Halvorsen unfolds themes and textures; you hear the boyars arriving before you see them, announced by bright woodwinds and brass that feel both regal and vividly human.

Who it's for

This work suits orchestras at the intermediate to advanced level, particularly those comfortable with independent inner voices and transparent textures. Its popularity makes it familiar to many audience members, yet its technical demands are genuine enough to give your musicians a satisfying challenge.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a clear pulse in the percussion section early in rehearsal. The march's forward energy depends on rhythmic precision from timpani and snare drum; lock this foundation before balancing the melodic lines.
  • Bring out the distinctive character of the opening woodwind figures by highlighting their interplay rather than blending them into a unified sound. Halvorsen wrote individual voices, not background padding.
  • Balance the brass fanfares with restraint in the opening sections. Resist the urge to let them dominate; their impact grows precisely because they enter gradually and deliberately.
  • Use rubato sparingly in the march sections themselves, but allow the ensemble to breathe at the structural transitions. These moments need space to register with listeners.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or closer to establish strong opening or closing impressions. It works exceptionally well in mixed orchestral programs alongside other Scandinavian works, or as a contrast to heavier Romantic symphonic literature. Consider it also for pops concerts or family concerts where accessible, memorable music with dramatic flair serves the program well.

Skills your students will build

  • Transparent orchestral balance across woodwind, brass, and string sections
  • Rhythmic precision in march form with coordinated articulation across parts
  • Dynamic control and phrasing in fanfare passages
  • Independent voice leading in middle registers
