Description
Art Sheinberg has discovered a gem from the late English Baroque keyboard literature and expertly scored it to sound as if it were originally for strings. The violin ll and viola parts are often doubled, as are the cello and bass parts; there are essentially three parts throughout. This gives a full and balanced sound which accommodates uneven instrumentation. Violin l parts are in third position much of the time, and alternate fingerings given for the other parts will keep other advanced players busy. The piece is in D major throughout, with the exception of brief excursions into A and B minor. Full of rhythmic drive and sparkling counterpoint, the piece is a sure winner with students and an excellent vehicle to teach detached style and ensemble independence. More about this title

About the Composer: William Selby

William Selby (1738-1798) was an English organist and composer active during the later Baroque and early Classical periods. Based primarily in London, he wrote prolifically for keyboard and composed works that bridged the contrapuntal traditions of the English Baroque with emerging Classical idioms, earning respect as both a performer and a serious musician in the concert life of his time.

Why we love this

Art Sheinberg's arrangement captures the intellectual rigor of Baroque counterpoint while solving a real instrumentation challenge. The transparent three-part writing and generous doublings in the lower voices create a balanced, full sound even when your section sizes don't cooperate, and the piece becomes a masterclass in how to teach ensemble independence without sacrificing cohesion.

What to expect

The piece sparkles with the ornamental precision and propulsive energy of English Baroque keyboard writing, now given the resonance and warmth of strings. The constant rhythmic momentum and interlocking melodic lines create a sense of intellectual purpose without heaviness.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 3 level with players ready to handle position work and understand independent voice leading. This arrangement works equally well for groups with strong upper strings and lighter lower sections, since the doubled writing compensates for uneven instrumentation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the detached articulation throughout to bring out the rhythmic drive. Each note should have clear separation so the counterpoint remains distinct across the parts.
  • Balance the three essential lines carefully during rehearsal; mark which players carry primary voices, secondary voices, and doublings so everyone understands their role in the texture.
  • Attend to the brief harmonic excursions into A and B minor. These moments need precise intonation and awareness, since they stand out clearly against the D major framework.
  • Use the printed alternate fingerings in violin II, viola, and lower parts to challenge your advanced players and ensure technical consistency across similar passages.

How to use it

Use this as a centerpiece for a Baroque or early masterworks concert, or place it alongside other arranged keyboard literature to demonstrate how ensemble texture can reshape familiar music. It also serves as a bridge between younger orchestras working on Classical symphonic form and more advanced groups tackling Baroque concerti.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and playing in third position (violin I) and navigating alternate positions and fingerings (other parts)
  • Maintaining ensemble independence within a three-part contrapuntal texture
  • Detached articulation and rhythmic precision in Baroque style
  • Intonation adjustment through harmonic color changes (D major, A minor, B minor)
  • Balance and blend when doubling parts (violin II/viola, cello/bass)
