About the Arranger: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music education for over three decades, first as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for major publishers including Alfred Music, and then as a prolific composer and arranger whose catalog now exceeds 600 published works. She holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976) and the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1979; M.M. in Accompanying, 1977), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. Her contributions to choral music have earned her ASCAP Special Music Award recognition every year since 1987.

Albrecht is particularly celebrated for her integration of movement and staging into choral performance, leading honor choirs and conducting festivals at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, where she currently serves on the Board of Trustees. She has also chaired the Board of Trustees for the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and received their "Pillar of Leadership" award.

Why we love this

Albrecht's arrangement taps into what makes spirituals endure: rhythmic momentum and emotional power. The ostinato-driven piano foundation immediately establishes energy while the three melodies weave together naturally, creating moments of stunning unison that feel earned rather than imposed. The staging suggestions give directors a clear path to visual engagement without requiring elaborate choreography.

What to expect

Infectious and bright. The arrangement channels the driving pulse of the spirituals without losing their dignity, and the entwined melodies create a sense of collective conversation rather than a single narrative. There's joy in the syncopation and warmth in the harmonies, with moments of power that feel inevitable.

Who it's for

TTB choirs looking for a contest or festival piece that demands energy and precision without requiring a large ensemble, and music directors who want students to experience the joy of rhythmic spiritual arrangement alongside performance movement. This works equally well for high school and community choirs seeking material that feels fresh and performance-ready in 12 pages.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythm section around that persistent left-hand ostinato; it's the heartbeat of the arrangement, so the piano and any accompaniment must groove together from the start to pull the choir into the groove.
  • Shape the dynamic arc deliberately. This piece lives in its energy, but contrast between sections (building to the finales of each spiritual) will prevent the high-tempo feel from flattening.
  • Attend to vowel consistency when the three melodies intertwine. The "ohs" and "ahs" across different voice parts need unified color for the blended lines to sing as one harmonic entity.
  • Use the staging suggestions to clarify the structural breaks between spirituals for the audience. Visual shifts ground listeners in the transitions and reinforce the medley's architecture.

How to use it

Open a concert with this to establish energy and engagement immediately, or place it mid-program as a palate-cleanser between heavier works. The staging suggestions make it an ideal anchor for a spiritual or folk spirituals concert segment, and its accessibility across multiple voicings means you can program it even if your roster is lighter in one part than another.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing syncopated rhythms across multiple voice parts
  • Maintaining rhythmic independence while singing ostinato-driven harmonic accompaniment
  • Blending three melodies sung simultaneously across different ranges
  • Executing stage movement and vocal performance in tandem without losing precision
