About the Composer: Alan Baylock

Alan Baylock

Alan Baylock has shaped contemporary jazz education and composition through decades of leadership in both military and academic settings. His 20 years as Chief Arranger for the Airmen of Note established him as a major voice in large ensemble writing, while his current role directing the Grammy-nominated One O'Clock Lab Band at the University of North Texas continues that legacy. As founder of his own jazz orchestra, Baylock recorded three acclaimed albums and conducted clinics at over 100 ensembles across professional, collegiate, and high school levels.

Beyond his work as a bandleader and educator, Baylock has co-founded Brava Jazz Publishing with composer Annie Booth, an initiative dedicated to publishing and promoting works by women composers and arrangers in big band jazz. His arrangements and compositions have been recorded by an extraordinary range of artists spanning jazz royalty (Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Heath, Kurt Elling), contemporary innovators (Melissa Aldana, Joshua Redman), and cross-genre collaborators including Chaka Khan and Al Jarreau. A faculty member of the National Jazz Workshop and active advocate within the Jazz Education Network, Baylock remains committed to expanding the voices and perspectives represented in the jazz canon.

Why we love this

El Abrazo balances emotional depth with engaging grooves in a way that feels fresh at the Grade 4 level. The structure gives your ensemble a complete arc to work with: the ballad framing creates genuine interpretive challenge, while the samba section lets the band lock into a groove and showcase individual soloists without sacrificing compositional sophistication. This is the kind of chart that stays in your ears long after the final rehearsal.

What to expect

El Abrazo opens with intimate, tear-inducing lyricism before shifting into a propulsive samba that feels both joyful and refined. The piece embraces the emotional vocabulary of the ballad while never losing sight of the kinetic energy that makes Latin jazz so appealing to audiences.

Who it's for

Grade 4 jazz ensembles with a solid section playing foundation and at least one tenor saxophone soloist ready to navigate changes. Directors programming for contests or festivals will find this chart engaging and performable within a reasonable rehearsal timeline.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the ballad beginning and ending with careful attention to dynamics and articulation; these sections carry the emotional weight of the piece and benefit from ensemble precision around phrasing and releases.
  • Lock the rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) into the samba feel at 110 BPM before the full ensemble enters the section; a tight foundation makes everything else easier.
  • Prepare the tenor soloist early with the chord changes so they can develop confident phrasing and navigate the changes fluently over the ensemble backdrop.
  • Balance the lead trumpet's high passages with strong support from the section; written high C demands solid breathing room and harmonic cushion from the rest of the section.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a centerpiece ballad on a jazz festival or concert program, offering enough contrast and sophistication to anchor a setlist of shorter or more uptempo pieces. Its recorded version on Baylock's Prime Time album gives students an authentic reference performance to study during preparation.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained control and phrasing in ballad contexts
  • Grooving in samba feel and maintaining swing against Latin rhythms
  • Supporting and balancing featured soloists
  • Reading and executing written high register passages (lead trumpet to high C)
  • Listening for sectional blend while maintaining individual voice clarity
  • Navigating tempo changes and maintaining ensemble cohesion across contrasting sections
