More about this title

About the Composer: Jerry Estes

Jerry Estes

Jerry Estes brings classroom experience directly into his compositional voice. As a vocal music teacher at Wydown Middle School, where he works with students in grades 6-8, he understands the practical needs and capabilities of young singers. He holds a B.M.E. in vocal emphasis from Southwest Baptist University and an M.M. from Southern Illinois University, grounding his work in solid musicological training.

Estes is an active member of MENC and ASCAP, connecting his teaching practice to the broader music education and composition communities. His dual commitment to the classroom and to composition means his pieces are written by someone who knows exactly how students learn and what makes music meaningful to sing.

Why we love this

Estes writes with accessibility and sincerity. These two short choral pieces have a directness that resonates with middle school and high school choirs without sacrificing musical substance. The inclusion of a recorded accompaniment track removes one barrier to performance and lets your singers focus on their voice parts without pianist coverage concerns.

What to expect

The language of these small-scale canzoni is direct and warm. They carry the quality of folk-rooted thinking without manufactured simplicity, offering singers genuine musical moments to inhabit rather than exercises to complete.

Who it's for

These pieces suit choral programs serving middle and high school singers seeking accessible yet purposeful secular choral music. They work especially well in settings where programming around peace and brotherhood themes strengthens concert coherence and meaning.

How to get the most out of it

  • Prepare your choir's entrance cues carefully before bringing in the accompaniment recording. Establish a clear visual or verbal countdown so singers can lock onto the track's tempo from the first note.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in sectional rehearsals to help each voice part hear how it sits within the harmonic and textural whole.
  • During the week before performance, rehearse with the CD to build confidence and ensure blend remains centered even as singers navigate the accompaniment's energy.

How to use it

Consider pairing these two pieces as a standalone set that carries thematic weight within a concert focused on unity and social harmony. Their brevity makes them natural bookend pieces or effective early-program offerings that establish an introspective, earnest tone.

Skills your students will build

  • Secure intonation within sustained harmonic passages
  • Ensemble balance and blend across multiple voice parts
  • Rhythmic independence when singing against recorded accompaniment
  • Text expression in shorter lyrical forms
