Description
Highly rhythmic parts as well as a lush lyric section! Fabulous contrasting styles set the stage for a rhythmic and energetic opening followed by a gorgeous and rich lyric fantasia on the traditional Irish tune The Minstrel Boy. Each section is featured on the melody, building to a high-energy conclusion. Great teaching opportunities, particularly for 3rd position in the first violins and 4th position in the cellos. About the Composer: Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips

Bob Phillips is a prolific composer and string pedagogue who has shaped orchestra programs across North America through both his teaching and his written works. Over his 27-year tenure building the Saline, Michigan string program into a nationally recognized model, he demonstrated how large ensemble instruction could embrace both classical and contemporary styles, a philosophy that permeates his compositions and arrangements.

Phillips has published more than 200 works for orchestras and bands, including the widely adopted Sound Innovations series and genre-specific collections like Fiddlers Philharmonic and Jazz Philharmonic. An ASCAP award-winning composer, he has served as conductor for all-state orchestras across the country and maintained a 12-year residency as conductor and arranger for the Wintergrass Festival in Seattle. His instructional DVDs and prolific output continue to influence string teachers and students nationwide.

Why we love this

Phillips balances technical challenge with musical accessibility in a way that keeps ensembles engaged without overwhelming them. The contrasting sections, rhythmic drive, and featured passages for different instruments create natural opportunities for sectional leadership and a genuine sense of ensemble accomplishment, while the traditional Irish melody grounds the piece in something students recognize and feel immediately.

What to expect

Dublin opens with rhythmic energy and contemporary orchestral texture before transforming into a lush, introspective treatment of The Minstrel Boy. The journey from propulsive opening to warm, singing melody creates a satisfying arc that feels both substantial and accessible, allowing students to experience multiple musical landscapes within a single piece.

Who it's for

String orchestras working at Grade 3 level, particularly those ready to tackle position work and want to build confidence through a piece that balances rhythmic drive with lyrical storytelling. Directors seeking programming that balances technical growth with musical engagement will find this especially useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the rhythmic precision in the opening section before moving into the lyric fantasia; the contrast between these two characters defines the piece, so clarity in the driving material makes the shift to lyricism more impactful.
  • Feature individual sections and chairs as the piece builds toward the conclusion. Having students hear themselves carry the melody reinforces their stake in the overall sound and their individual responsibility to the ensemble.
  • Work the position shifts in first violin and cello parts gradually across rehearsals. These passages are pedagogically valuable, so allocate time for fingering discussions and intonation checks without rushing the technical work.

How to use it

This works particularly well as a centerpiece for a concert that showcases both the versatility and technical growth of your orchestra. It pairs naturally with lighter contemporary works or with a classical standard, and its clear sections make it engaging for audience members while offering substantive content for adjudicated performances or festival settings.

Skills your students will build

  • Third position playing in first violins
  • Fourth position playing in cellos
  • Rhythmic precision and ensemble synchronization
  • Lyrical phrasing and dynamic shaping
  • Leadership and featured melody presentation across string sections
