More about this title

About the Composer: Michael Souders

Michael Souders

Michael Souders teaches music at Colonial Heights Public Schools in Virginia and has become one of Alfred Music's most prolific choral composers. His work centers on what he calls "Positive American Music," a philosophy reflected across his YouTube channel, which has accumulated over 4.5 million views and more than 3,600 subscribers. Souders graduated from James Madison University in 1989 with a degree in Music and Worship, where he performed as a trumpet soloist with the Marching Royal Dukes and served as pianist for the jazz ensemble.

Since entering the classroom in 2005, Souders has written music directly for his students, ensuring his compositions address real pedagogical needs and age-appropriate material. His work has reached educators worldwide, including the widely performed "Thank You, Soldiers." He studied composition, arranging, and recording with Robert W. Smith during his university years, training that continues to inform his accessible, singable approach to choral writing.

Why we love this

Souders writes rock-inflected secular pieces that engage students without sacrificing musicality or good voice leading. His classroom experience means every piece is designed to sound and feel rewarding from the first rehearsal, a quality that consistently makes his work a reliable choice for concerts where you need strong audience connection alongside solid musical content.

What to expect

Dream carries the forward momentum and accessibility of modern rock while maintaining clean vocal writing. The recorded accompaniment propels the music forward, letting singers focus on expression and blend rather than fighting to stay afloat rhythmically.

Who it's for

This piece works for middle school, high school, and adult choirs seeking contemporary repertoire with popular appeal. The rock idiom and secular text make it ideal for concerts, assemblies, or contests where you want to program something current and energetic that still demonstrates musicianship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the rhythm section carefully in rehearsal; rock idioms require secure rhythmic foundation, so lock in drums and bass before layering vocals
  • Work the recorded accompaniment into rehearsals early so singers develop comfort with the groove and can focus on blend and intonation rather than tracking the track
  • Use dynamics strategically to shape the arrangement; rock songs live or die on energy control and well-placed peaks

How to use it

Program this alongside other contemporary pieces to create a concert segment that feels cohesive and current, or use it as an opener to capture audience attention immediately. It also works well as a standalone feature for a pops concert or school assembly where broader appeal matters.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing rock idioms and contemporary style with accurate rhythmic feel
  • Balancing voices in a groove-based arrangement
  • Tracking and responding to recorded accompaniment in real time
  • Stylistic interpretation beyond classical technique
