About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni award. Early in his career, he spent eight years managing rights and licensing for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. His prolific output as a composer includes more than 800 choral works across all difficulty levels, performed regularly in English-speaking countries and earning him multiple ASCAP Special Awards.

Beyond composition, Althouse has shaped music education through co-written musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, compiled influential vocal solo collections, and authored widely-used classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and Ready to Read Music. He has served on the boards of the North Carolina Master Chorale and the Folk Art Society of America, and co-wrote I Hear America Singing, performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.

Why we love this

Althouse's disco medley captures the infectious energy of the genre while remaining musically substantial for SSA choirs. The 24-page octavo shows his signature skill at layering multiple hit melodies into a cohesive arrangement that keeps audiences engaged across 5 1/2 minutes without feeling repetitive. It's the kind of piece that builds genuine enthusiasm from singers while delivering the fun the title promises.

What to expect

Pure disco joy. The medley format creates a non-stop party atmosphere while Althouse's arrangement ensures singers stay engaged through clever voice leading and smart text layering. You'll feel the polyester, the mirror ball, and the unmistakable groove that defined the era.

Who it's for

SSA choirs looking for contemporary programming that energizes both singers and audiences. This works particularly well for groups with limited male singers or those seeking a departure from traditional pop fare without sacrificing musical credibility. It suits intermediate to advanced ensembles comfortable with rhythmic precision and stylistic authenticity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the rhythm section locked and driving; the recorded accompaniment is essential for maintaining the steady disco pulse throughout the medley.
  • Shape each hit within the medley distinctly so transitions feel fresh rather than blurred. Mark your cuts and resets clearly during rehearsal.
  • Encourage confident, forward-moving diction. Disco thrives on crisp articulation and rhythmic precision in the text.
  • Balance the vocal blend across all three parts; the SSA voicing means your alto line carries substantial harmonic weight and needs to sit solidly in the mix.

How to use it

Program this as a concert closer or spring show highlight to send audiences home smiling. It pairs well with other contemporary pop arrangements and can anchor a full evening of lighter repertoire, or serve as the perfect tonal contrast following a set of more serious choral works. Consider it for pep rallies, community events, or any concert where the goal includes audience connection and pure entertainment value.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in syncopated pop styles
  • Executing clean part independence within SSA voicing under rhythmic pressure
  • Stylistically authentic disco phrasing and diction
  • Following and responding to recorded accompaniment cues
  • Sustaining energized performance intensity across an extended medley
