Why we love this

Montgomery writes pieces that elementary pianists actually want to play. The staccato touch and hand position shifts embedded in this piece address real technical needs without feeling like an etude, and the dance-like character keeps students engaged through the full four pages.

What to expect

Diddley-Doodley bounces with infectious energy, its C-major tonality bright and approachable. The alternating hand rhythms and staccato touches create a playful, almost comical musical texture that invites performers to have fun at the keyboard.

Who it's for

Elementary pianists ready to tackle rhythmic coordination between hands and refine their staccato technique. This piece works well for recital students seeking a contemporary character piece that showcases articulation and hand independence without excessive technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a consistent staccato touch in both hands before tackling the alternating rhythms; Montgomery's writing asks for crisp articulation to define the bouncy character.
  • Map out the hand position shifts during practice so transitions feel seamless rather than choppy; marking the measures where shifts occur prevents hesitation in performance.
  • Maintain steady tempo through the rhythmic alternations between hands; the novelty quality depends on rhythmic clarity and even pulse.

How to use it

Program this as a recital opener or mid-program palate cleanser when you want to showcase a student's rhythmic precision and sense of humor. The novelty character and accessible key make it ideal for spring recitals or student-led informal performances.
