About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and pursued advanced study at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she specialized in Suzuki pedagogy at the graduate level. She brings classroom experience to her arrangements through her work teaching elementary and middle school strings in the Appleton Area School District, while also maintaining a private cello studio at Lawrence University's Arts Academy.

Why we love this

Gruselle's arrangement honors the spiritual's emotional core while respecting where your students actually are technically. The minimal shifting and accessible part writing mean your ensemble can focus entirely on tone production and phrase shaping, which is exactly what makes this piece so rewarding to conduct. At this level, it's rare to find an arrangement that demands maturity of sound without demanding technical gymnastics.

What to expect

Contemplative and warm, with the spiritual's inherent dignity coming through in sustained lines and gentle harmonic motion. The arrangement creates space for each section to breathe, building a sound that feels both historically rooted and emotionally immediate.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the 2.5 grade level who are ready to move beyond pure technique and explore expressive, mature musicmaking. Directors seeking a festival or contest piece that showcases both ensemble cohesion and emotional depth without requiring advanced shifting or complex rhythmic navigation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape each phrase with an arc rather than starting and stopping at the barline; this spiritual unfolds best when your ensemble hears the longer melodic contours across multiple measures.
  • Establish a warm, centered tone across all four parts before layering in expression; the harmonic richness depends on intonation that's locked in from the first rehearsal.
  • Balance your inner voices carefully so the viola and second violin lines support without overwhelming the melody, creating depth without muddiness.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a centerpiece for a concert exploring American roots music or as a quiet moment in a longer program where emotional contrast matters. Consider pairing it with livelier fare to highlight how your ensemble can command both restraint and energy.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining long phrases with consistent vibrato and tone quality
  • Tuning major and minor triads in close harmony
  • Balancing part writing to support rather than dominate melodic lines
  • Shaping musical expression without technical distraction from shifting
