About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music education for over thirty years as a composer, conductor, and clinician with deep expertise in choral movement integration. Her catalog includes more than 600 published works alongside 75 songbooks and musicals, sustained by annual ASCAP Special Music Awards since 1987. She led publications departments at major educational publishers and has conducted honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama and M.M. in Accompanying), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. Her contributions to music education leadership earned her the Omicron Delta Kappa "Pillar of Leadership" award and Distinguished Alumna honors from both her undergraduate and graduate institutions. She currently resides in North Carolina with her husband, composer Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht and Althouse deliver a modern holiday piece that avoids saccharine sentimentality while remaining accessible across skill levels. The recorded accompaniment option gives directors flexibility for rehearsal or performance, and the straightforward text makes this workable for choirs seeking contemporary Christmas material beyond traditional standards.

What to expect

Charming and conversational, this piece captures the voice of someone speaking directly to Santa with sincerity wrapped in lightness. The music sits at an accessible vocal range and likely features tuneful melodies that stay with singers after rehearsal.

Who it's for

This piece suits secondary choirs and recreational adult ensembles looking for secular Christmas material with contemporary appeal. Directors building holiday concerts around modern, character-driven songs will find this a natural fit alongside traditional repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the energy of the lyrics with clear diction so the conversational tone with Santa stays playful rather than rushed
  • Layer in simple movement gestures if your ensemble is comfortable; Albrecht's writing often invites physical expression without requiring choreography
  • Use the recorded accompaniment strategically during early rehearsals to lock in tempos and harmonic references before transitioning to live piano support

How to use it

Place this during the first half of a holiday concert to establish a warm, inclusive tone before shifting to more solemn or elaborate arrangements. Its contemporary approach works particularly well on programs mixing classic holiday songs with newer secular works.

Skills your students will build

  • Clear diction in conversational, lyric-driven singing
  • Balancing character and musicality in secular holiday repertoire
  • Ensemble blend in contemporary choral textures
