About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music education for over three decades, serving as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at major educational publishers including Alfred Music. A prolific composer with more than 600 published choral works and 75 larger songbooks and musicals in print, she has been recognized annually by ASCAP for her contributions since 1987. Her conducting credits span prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, where she has led honor choirs and festivals across the country.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both Rollins College and the University of Miami Frost School of Music. She is also a recipient of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society's "Pillar of Leadership" award.

Why we love this

Albrecht's deep experience as both a conductor and choral pedagogue shines through in this systematically organized collection. Rather than random exercises, you get warm-ups purposefully designed for specific rehearsal situations and vocal development goals, which means you can quickly locate exactly what your choir needs on any given day. The breadth of categories (breathing, diction, intonation, phrasing, range development) reflects what actually happens in a real choir's journey from warm-up through performance.

What to expect

Opening this book feels like having a trusted vocal coach in your rehearsal room, ready with exactly the right exercise the moment your singers need it. The collection moves you seamlessly from foundational breath work through increasingly nuanced aspects of choral sound, creating a logical arc that singers can follow and internalize. Each warm-up builds awareness and agency in the voice, transforming the first ten minutes of rehearsal from routine habit into active preparation.

Who it's for

This resource serves any director managing rehearsals with singers of varying ages and levels who need a structured, comprehensive toolkit for efficient warm-ups. Whether you conduct a community chorus, school ensemble, or mixed-age group, the breadth of exercises means you'll find targeted activities for breath support, intonation refinement, diction clarity, and range expansion. It's especially valuable if you want to move beyond generic vocalises toward purposeful preparation matched to the specific challenges your singers face.

How to get the most out of it

  • Sequence warm-ups to address your ensemble's immediate needs before tackling the day's repertoire; use the categorized structure to move deliberately from breath awareness into articulation work.
  • Build continuity by returning to certain warm-ups regularly throughout the season so singers develop muscle memory and confidence with the exercises.
  • Layer dynamics and tempo variations within familiar warm-ups to challenge singers' control and focus their listening without adding entirely new material.

How to use it

Use this as your primary warm-up resource throughout the rehearsal year, rotating through different categories based on the technical demands of your current repertoire. If your choir is preparing for a concert featuring pieces that demand precise diction and fast text articulation, draw from the pronunciation exercises; if you're working on a slower, more legit sound, emphasize the phrasing and dynamic control activities. The comb binding makes it easy to flip to the section you need without fumbling through pages mid-rehearsal.

Skills your students will build

  • Breath support and breath management for sustained singing
  • Clear articulation and precise diction across languages
  • Intonation matching and harmonic listening
  • Dynamic control and shaping within phrases
  • Vocal range extension and flexibility
  • Efficient rehearsal responsiveness through targeted warm-up exercises
