About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later recognized with the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans both publishing and composition; he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. As a composer, Althouse has published over 800 choral works performed widely across the English-speaking world and is an ASCAP writer member with multiple Special Award recognitions.

Beyond composition, Althouse has shaped choral pedagogy through numerous collaborative projects and instructional resources. He has co-written children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, curated vocal solo collections including Folk Songs for Solo Singers, and co-authored influential warm-up and composer education books. His work I Hear America Singing, written with Albrecht, was performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Barack Obama's 2009 Inauguration. Althouse has remained active in music education advocacy through his service on the boards of the North Carolina Master Chorale and the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

With over 200 exercises organized by pedagogical purpose rather than random assembly, this collection respects your rehearsal time and your singers' need for variety. The structure moves deliberately from physical warm-ups through vocal technique to ensemble blend, then branches into genre-specific preparation for jazz, pop, and sacred repertoire, giving you exactly what you need when you need it.

What to expect

Opening this collection feels like having a seasoned mentor in the room. The exercises move with intention from the physical (breathing, posture, relaxation) into the musical (intervals, blend, style), making it clear that warm-ups are not filler but essential preparation that shapes how your choir sounds.

Who it's for

Choral directors working with singers at any level who want a systematic, comprehensive approach to vocal preparation. Whether you lead a church choir, school ensemble, or community chorus, this book provides the scaffolding to warm up efficiently while addressing specific technical and stylistic demands of your repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build a consistent warm-up sequence at the start of each rehearsal by selecting 3-4 exercises from different categories; rotation prevents monotony while addressing the same technical foundations.
  • Use the multichoice warm-ups to develop blend and intonation across your entire range; singers hear themselves within harmonic context rather than in unison.
  • Introduce the Jazz/Pop/Swing exercises one rehearsal before programming contemporary literature so singers adjust their vowel shapes and rhythmic approach in real time.
  • Deploy the canon section toward the end of warm-ups as a transition into full rehearsal; they build listening and independence while reinforcing melodic confidence.

How to use it

Build your entire season's warm-up strategy around this book by selecting categories that match your programming. If you are rehearsing Bach in October and contemporary pop in March, you have genre-specific exercises ready weeks in advance, allowing singers to internalize stylistic shifts before they encounter the actual repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Breath control and physical relaxation techniques
  • Interval recognition and secure intonation across ranges
  • Blend and balance in multichoice settings
  • Stylistic vocal adjustment for jazz, pop, and swing idioms
  • Ensemble listening and independent part security through canon singing
  • Vocal endurance and flexibility through varied technical exercises
