About the Composer: Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin heard complete compositions in his head from age five and had the discipline to write them down in full. By thirteen, he'd already composed his first big band chart, Hang Loose, a feat that signaled his arrival as a major voice in jazz composition. His work has earned three Emmy Awards and multiple Grammy nominations across television, film, and concert music.

Goodwin's orchestrations underscore major motion pictures including Bad Boys II, Con Air, Remember the Titans, and Star Trek: Nemesis. He has composed for and performed alongside world-class artists including Christina Aguilera, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and David Foster. Since 2000, he has led Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, one of Los Angeles's premier jazz ensembles, and continues to conduct with major symphony orchestras across North America and Europe.

Why we love this

Goodwin writes bass and guitar lines that grip the ear from the downbeat and carry the whole ensemble through the arrangement. The scoring alternates between tight unison passages and colorful harmony, giving your section leaders moments to shine while keeping the ensemble cohesive. Every wind player gets solo space with written-out suggestions, eliminating the guesswork of what works at this level and building confidence across the band.

What to expect

The groove lands immediately and never lets go. Bass and guitar establish a hypnotic rhythmic pattern that carries you forward while the winds trade between locked ensemble statements and individual moments in the spotlight. The whole piece swings with contemporary jazz energy without overwhelming younger or less experienced players.

Who it's for

Jazz ensemble directors programming a Grade 3 chart that delivers immediate impact with sophisticated writing. Bands preparing for contests or festivals will appreciate the clear structure, accessible solo opportunities, and professional orchestrations that sound polished in performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic feel between bass and guitar first. That captivating opening pattern sets the groove for everything that follows, so spend rehearsal time isolating those two parts until they breathe as one unit.
  • Balance the lead trumpet's written-out solo against the ensemble background. At written G-sharp on top, the line will project naturally, but make sure the rest of the section listens underneath rather than playing through.
  • Approach the unison passages with precise articulation and dynamics. These moments cut through the texture most effectively when the ensemble feels like a single voice rather than five individual parts.
  • Use the suggested solos as a teaching tool. Rather than having students improvise over unfamiliar chord changes, these written parts model jazz phrasing and solo construction at a Grade 3 level.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a concert centerpiece or contest selection where you want to showcase both ensemble cohesion and individual soloists. It pairs well with straightforward swing standards or up-tempo blues vehicles, giving audiences a complete picture of your band's jazz facility.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing written jazz solos with appropriate phrasing and articulation
  • Locking groove-oriented rhythm section parts (bass and guitar coordination)
  • Balancing individual solo lines against ensemble accompaniment figures
  • Recognizing and playing unison versus harmony sections with equal precision
  • Responding to contemporary jazz composition and arrangement techniques
