More about this title

About the Composer: JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall is a Texas-based composer and educator who brings practical band room experience to his writing. He earned degrees in music education from the University of North Texas and Texas State University, studying composition under Dr. Michael Ippolito and Dr. Jack Wilds while refining his conducting craft with Dr. Nicholas Williams and Dr. Caroline Beatty.

Hall spent eight years directing middle school bands, consistently earning sweepstakes recognition at state evaluations and leading his 2018 non-varsity band at Griffin Middle School to the first Citation of Excellence ever awarded to a Frisco ISD middle school ensemble. As a performer, he's logged significant time with the North Texas Wind Symphony, Carrollton Wind Symphony, and the Texas State Wind Symphony (principal tuba for two years). His compositions have earned major recognition, including a 2020 Dallas Winds fanfare award and the 2021 Barbara Buehlman Prize for middle school band work. Hall is a four-time Texas All-State Band member who also performed with the 2014 Disneyland All-American College Band.

Why we love this

Hall nails the balance between novelty and musicality that directors need for a killer program change-up. The 9-1-1 reference gives students an instant hook and the audience immediate context, but the real strength lies in maintaining genuine forward motion without sacrificing the Grade 1.5 accessibility that makes this work for developing ensembles. It's the rare piece that sounds impressive to both audiences and adjudicators.

What to expect

The opening lands like a siren call, instantly commanding attention. From there the piece stays in motion with a sleek, purposeful energy that feels modern and confident rather than frantic. There's an intelligence to the orchestration that rewards listening beyond the initial hook.

Who it's for

Grade 1.5 concert bands ready to tackle something with genuine character and contemporary relevance. Directors seeking a contest or festival piece that combines accessibility with audience engagement will find this especially useful for younger ensembles that need confidence-building repertoire with adult-level musicianship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic drive from the opening and maintain that propulsive energy throughout. The urgency is the piece's identity, not just a surface characteristic.
  • Clarify the orchestration in the upper woodwinds so the motivic idea registers clearly when it enters. Young players often underestimate how exposed they are at this level.
  • Use the contrast between the forward momentum and moments of 'cool confidence' as your interpretive anchor. Without that architectural clarity, the piece can blur into one-note excitement.
  • Trust the arrangement to work at tempo. Younger bands often drag this piece, which kills the entire point.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a second or third selection when you need to shift mood and tempo after something lyrical or slower. The contemporary reference point and consistent momentum make it an excellent selection for programs that mix classical repertoire with something that speaks directly to student and audience engagement.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining consistent energy and forward motion across phrase boundaries
  • Balancing sectional independence with unified ensemble sound
  • Reading and executing tight rhythmic figures in mixed instrumentation
  • Responding to contemporary musical references and thematic material
