More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music, where he has cultivated a catalog of over 450 choral works, arrangements, and vocal resources now performed by singers across the globe. His compositional voice spans sacred and secular settings, children's musicals, and pedagogical materials including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique.

Beyond the page, Beck serves regularly as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician for music educators and students throughout the United States and beyond, with recent engagements including honor choirs and all-state groups across the Southeast. A tenor soloist and director himself, he has performed with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and brings two decades of experience as an Alfred Music studio singer. He holds degrees in music education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Why we love this

Beck writes choral music that feels genuinely singable without sacrificing musical interest. The text setting is intelligent and word-stress aware, which means your singers will sound better with less repetition of "fix it" rehearsals. This is a piece that moves audiences without demanding excessive rehearsal time from your ensemble.

What to expect

Warm and reflective, with the kind of sincerity that comes from gratitude without sentimentality. The harmonic language supports the text's message while remaining rooted in a musical vocabulary your singers will find inviting to explore.

Who it's for

SATB choirs seeking repertoire with genuine emotional resonance and accessible voicings. This works well for community choirs, church choirs, and school groups at the intermediate to advanced level who want a concert piece that connects with audiences.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the harmonic warmth in the SATB texture by encouraging steady, supported breathing throughout longer phrases; this allows the piece to resonate rather than strain.
  • Balance the recorded accompaniment volume so it anchors without overwhelming the choir's natural tone quality.
  • Attend to text clarity on words that carry the song's central message; slight rubato on strategic moments will invite listeners into the emotional arc.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece in a concert focused on affirmation and reflection, or pair it with contrasting secular works to create a balanced second half. Its accessibility makes it suitable for spring or fall concerts, and the recorded accompaniment option allows flexible performance contexts from full concert productions to smaller community gatherings.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained SATB harmony with balance and blend
  • Interpreting text with musical intention in a secular setting
  • Performing with recorded accompaniment while maintaining ensemble cohesion
  • Shaping long phrases with attention to harmonic progression
