About the Composer: Shirl Jae Atwell

Shirl Jae Atwell

Shirl Jae Atwell holds degrees in music theory and composition from Kansas State Teachers College and the University of Louisville, with additional postgraduate study in composition at the University of South Carolina. Her catalog spans opera, ballet, and orchestral works, earning her the 1996 National School Orchestra Association composition prize for the string orchestra piece Modus á Four and the 1997 Texas Orchestra Directors Association award for Drifen. Her ballet Lucy, featuring her compositions and choreography by Alun Jones, premiered with the Louisville Ballet in 1999 and went on to win an Emmy Award for its televised production.

Atwell's work has been recognized internationally, with six of her scores entering the permanent collection of the Paris Bibliothèque Internationale de Musique Contemporaine. Commissions and premieres of her music have involved ensembles ranging from church choirs to professional orchestras, reflecting her versatility across multiple musical genres and her sustained engagement with both educational and professional musical communities.

Why we love this

Continuen sits comfortably at Grade 3.5, giving intermediate string quartets accessible material with genuine compositional craft rather than simplification. Atwell's award-winning experience writing for string ensembles means the voices balance naturally and the part writing rewards careful listening and ensemble attention.

What to expect

Continuen unfolds with forward momentum and lyrical clarity, balancing moments of introspection with periods of ensemble dialogue. The work maintains accessibility while rewarding groups with secure intonation and attention to ensemble balance.

Who it's for

String quartet ensembles at the intermediate level who are ready to engage with substantive chamber music that doesn't require advanced technique. This works for school chamber groups, youth orchestra string quartet sections, and private studio ensembles preparing for competitions or recitals.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices carefully; string quartet texture demands that no voice disappears into accompaniment figuration.
  • Pay attention to intonation in double stops and sustained intervals, especially where voices move at different rates.
  • Shape phrases from the first violin part while ensuring the lower voices maintain rhythmic cohesion and harmonic support.

How to use it

Fit this into a chamber music recital or youth orchestra concert where you want to feature a strong compositional voice at an intermediate level. It pairs well alongside standard quartet repertoire from the classical and contemporary catalogs, and provides an excellent vehicle for demonstrating how younger ensembles can tackle music with real artistic substance.

Skills your students will build

  • Balanced ensemble voice leading in a four-part texture
  • Sustained intonation in chordal passages
  • Rhythmic independence while maintaining harmonic cohesion
  • Phrasing and musical shape across longer melodic lines
