Why we love this

Contemplation delivers exactly what young orchestras need to hear: a work that demands musical maturity without overwhelming them technically. The dissonances Lucas places throughout the score force genuine listening and adjustment from every section, transforming a ballad into a masterclass in balance and tone color. It's the kind of piece that sounds effortless when done well and teaches why ensemble playing matters.

What to expect

Contemplation unfolds as a moment of stillness; the fluid ballad texture invites listeners inward rather than outward. Unexpected harmonic colors emerge and settle, creating an introspective atmosphere where every player's contribution to tone and balance becomes audible and necessary.

Who it's for

Young string orchestras at the early-intermediate level ready to expand their musical vocabulary beyond traditional harmony. This score suits programs that include both festival performances and concert settings, offering a sophisticated sound that builds student confidence without excessive technical demand.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with a singer's arc, resisting the urge to rush through quieter phrases even though the overall texture is sparse.
  • Treat the dissonant moments as conversation rather than collision; they should sound intentional and composerly, not accidental or muddy.
  • Use the two-minute duration strategically by controlling the breath in longer phrases and making silence feel musical, not awkward.
  • Balance texture carefully in rehearsal by isolating the dissonant voices separately first, then adding supporting lines so students understand their function.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece for a concert focused on contemporary string writing, or use it to open a second half after energetic earlier pieces. The work's reflective quality pairs well with contrasting repertoire, offering audiences a distinct textural and emotional shift while showcasing your orchestra's musical maturity.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening for dissonant intervals and maintaining intonation when chords contain unexpected harmonic colors
  • Balancing independent melodic lines while supporting harmonic texture
  • Sustaining tone quality and phrase shape over longer, minimally accompanied passages
  • Responding to ensemble sound and adjusting dynamics and timbre to blend with surrounding voices
  • Understanding contemporary compositional language and harmonic function
