About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw has spent decades shaping choral music education across North America and internationally, bringing his distinctive blend of musical rigor and infectious energy to ensembles and workshops everywhere. His formal training in music education, choral composition, and conducting (DMA from University of Washington) anchors a career defined by prolific output: over 2,500 choral arrangements and compositions, nearly 20 million copies sold worldwide, and consistent ASCAP recognition.

Beyond the numbers, Shaw's influence runs deep in how he teaches and creates. He founded and directed acclaimed vocal jazz ensembles at College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, and University of Missouri at Kansas City, and currently directs the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University. His one-on-one collaborations with jazz legends like Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks shaped his approach to arranging and vocal artistry. With his wife Markita, he has also ventured into musical theater, creating an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Why we love this

Shaw's arrangements sit at the sweet spot where accessibility meets sophistication. His pop choral writing consistently gives singers something genuinely fun to perform while maintaining the musical integrity that keeps directors engaged and audiences impressed.

What to expect

The energy here is infectious and grounded. A conga rhythm anchors everything, pulling your singers into a groove that feels both accessible and sophisticated. This is pop music that moves, with enough rhythmic interest to keep singers engaged and enough familiarity to connect with audiences immediately.

Who it's for

This arrangement works for choirs of mixed voices looking to add contemporary pop with a Latin-influenced groove to their repertoire. It's equally at home in a high school show choir, a college pop ensemble, or a community choir wanting to expand beyond traditional fare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic precision of the percussion parts. Even though these are recorded accompaniments, the groove only locks when your singers internalize the pocket with clarity and confidence.
  • Use the optional instrumental parts to reinforce the conga rhythm for your singers who need extra harmonic or rhythmic support during early rehearsals.
  • Shape the phrasing around the syncopation rather than fighting it. Let the natural swing of the Latin feel breathe through your interpretation.

How to use it

Program this for a section of your concert where you want to shift the mood toward contemporary energy and Latin flavor. It pairs well alongside other pop arrangements in a lighter set and signals to your audience that your singers can command both traditional and modern idioms.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing syncopated rhythms against a steady beat
  • Performing Latin-influenced pop styles with authentic rhythmic feel
  • Blending with recorded accompaniments while maintaining ensemble independence
  • Internalizing conga rhythm patterns and layering vocal parts over percussion grooves
