About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings decades of experience as a choral composer, arranger, and conductor to his work. He has led performances at major venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Sydney Opera House, and currently serves as Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press. His compositions and arrangements are performed regularly across the United States and internationally.
Beyond his music career, Gilpin has expanded his professional practice into organizing and productivity coaching, drawing on the same precision and clarity that shapes his compositions. He is an active member of ACDA, NAfME, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and holds ASCAP awards for his choral work.
Why we love this
Gilpin's setting of Marlowe's text achieves a rare balance: the choral writing feels immediate and singable without sacrificing sophistication. The piano part is integral to the work rather than merely accompanying, making this a genuinely collaborative experience between singers and pianist at rehearsals and in performance. Its modest eight-page length and SSAA voicing make it accessible to many ensembles while the artistic depth ensures it stands out at competitions and festivals.
What to expect
Romantic, intimate, and unhurried. The harmonic language is warm and lyrical without veering into sentimentality, giving singers room to inhabit the emotional world of Marlowe's seduction poem. The piano accompaniment envelops the voices in lush support, creating an almost chamber-music quality despite the ensemble texture.
Who it's for
SSAA choirs looking for genuinely artistic, concert-ready repertoire that holds up under adjudication. The work suits advanced high school ensembles and college or community choirs seeking pieces that are both rewarding to sing and substantive enough for recital or festival programming.
How to get the most out of it
- Bring the piano part fully into rehearsals from the first reading. The accompaniment shapes the harmonic color and phrasing at every moment, so ensemble and pianist should develop the musical line together rather than separately.
- Attend to text clarity without sacrificing the lush sonority of the writing. The romantic poetry deserves expressive diction, but the richness of the harmony should never feel muddied.
- Shape the dynamics across the full eight pages with a long-range arc in mind. Avoid treating individual phrases as isolated moments; let the emotional trajectory of Marlowe's words guide your pacing and intensity.
- Balance the upper voices carefully so that the soprano line doesn't overshadow the alto harmonies. Gilpin's counterpoint is deliberately woven, and covering the inner voices diminishes the texture.
How to use it
This work pairs beautifully with other secular texts of literary merit on a poetry-focused concert program, or anchor it as the showcase piece on a festival appearance where artistic interpretation and refined ensemble singing will be valued. Its eight-page length and moderate difficulty make it an ideal secondary selection on a mixed repertoire recital.
