John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, and later received an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in South Carolina. He spent his career in school music leadership, served as educational director for Warner Brothers Music in New York, and taught music education at the University of Miami before transitioning to semi-retirement in North Carolina in 1982.

Kinyon has become one of the most prolific composers of educational band and orchestra music, with over 250 published works for Alfred Music alone. His catalog spans grades 1 through 3 and includes original marches, ballads, and overtures written across a wide range of musical styles, making him an essential resource for directors building balanced, accessible repertoire.
