About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has established himself as one of today's most prolific composers for singers of all ages. With over 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals in print, his music reaches classrooms, concert halls, and stages worldwide. Beck earned his Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Ithaca College and his Master's degree in Music Education from Northwest Missouri State University, grounding his compositions in both pedagogy and performance practice.

Beyond his publishing work, Beck is an active guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States and beyond. He has served as a commissioned composer and guest conductor for honor choirs and all-state groups, particularly in the Southeast. A tenor himself, he performs regularly with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has contributed as a studio singer for Alfred Music since 1992. His dual commitment to choral artistry and music literacy shapes every piece he creates.

Why we love this

Beck's gift for crafting accessible, engaging two-part writing shines here. The piece balances musical substance with the practical needs of developing singers, making it equally suitable for elementary choirs building confidence and middle school ensembles looking for repertoire with personality.

What to expect

Clever Chameleon captures playful energy and witty character through its lyrical storytelling. The music mirrors the chameleon's quick-change nature with energetic rhythms and tuneful writing that keeps singers engaged and audiences delighted.

Who it's for

This piece works well for elementary and middle school choirs seeking repertoire that entertains while teaching solid musicianship. The two-part voicing makes it accessible to mixed-age ensembles or groups still building their part-singing skills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the characterization through dynamic shaping rather than relying on tempo changes alone; let the text paint the picture of the chameleon's quick transformation.
  • If hand percussion is included in your arrangement, assign parts early in rehearsal so students can coordinate their rhythmic entrances with confidence.
  • Record a section rehearsal with just the melody line and listen for clarity of vowels, especially during the faster passages where articulation matters most.

How to use it

Program this as a light, crowd-pleasing opener or as part of a thematic concert celebrating nature or animals. It pairs well alongside other Beck works or secular pieces of similar difficulty in a spring or end-of-year concert where entertainment and musicality both matter.

Skills your students will build

  • Two-part singing with secure intonation and blend
  • Clear articulation in faster rhythmic passages
  • Text expression and character interpretation
  • Optional coordination with hand percussion parts
