About the Composer: Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest

Timothy Loest has spent over three decades in the classroom developing practical, musician-centered pedagogical approaches. His compositions for young band have been performed internationally, and his work has appeared on network television including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Good Morning America. In 2017, his composition Cloud Gate (Reflections of a City) reached over 5,000 spectators at Chicago's Millennium Park, and that same year he received the Illinois Grade School Music Association's Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education.

Loest's publishing career began in 1995 and includes collaborations with major music publishers including C.L. Barnhouse Company, The FJH Music Company, and MakeMusic Publications. He founded Fanfare Music Press in 2022 to champion high-quality compositions and arrangements for band. Beyond his own compositions, Loest has shaped instrumental instruction through his association with best-selling method series including Measures of Success, Warm-ups and Beyond, Rhythms and Beyond, and Chorales and Beyond. He holds degrees from Illinois State University and Northwestern University, maintains ASCAP membership, and regularly accepts commissions for band.

Why we love this

Loest and DeStefano understand that baritone players need targeted, instrument-specific warm-up routines that build sound quality and confidence. The flexibility of four-part harmony written for all instruments means you can adapt the chorales to your ensemble's instrumentation without compromises or missing parts. The inclusion of Kevin Lepper's percussion arrangements transforms what could be rote warm-up work into genuinely musical daily routines that engage your entire ensemble.

What to expect

Opening this book brings clarity and structure to rehearsal beginnings; each routine flows naturally from breathing and long tones into melodic and harmonic work. The progression from fundamentals into complete four-part chorales feels purposeful rather than mechanical, anchored by thoughtful percussion writing that makes every note count.

Who it's for

Baritone players in concert bands, whether in middle school, high school, or community settings, will find targeted exercises that address their instrument's specific technical and musical needs. Directors seeking a comprehensive daily warm-up sequence that builds fundamental skills without disconnecting from musical context will appreciate the structured variety across keys and routines.

How to get the most out of it

  • Address long tones with focus on consistent embouchure and steady air support; use these passages to establish the warm, centered tone quality baritones should cultivate
  • Lock pitch matching exercises with the rest of your section by listening actively and adjusting intonation without sacrificing tone quality
  • Approach the chord progressions as harmonic anchors; balance your dynamic contribution against the other three parts to build ensemble blend
  • Engage with the percussion accompaniment as written; the rhythmic interplay creates musical context beyond a simple backing track

How to use it

Establish this as your rehearsal foundation, rotating through the 10 keys and three cycles across your ensemble's weekly schedule to provide consistent skill-building without repetition fatigue. The modular structure works equally well for full ensemble warm-ups or for baritone section work during sectional rehearsals.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained breath control through long tone exercises
  • Pitch matching and intonation in context of ensemble sound
  • Interval recognition and accurate intonation across major and minor tonalities
  • Harmonic awareness through reading and balancing four-part chord progressions
  • Scale and arpeggio fluency in 10 common major and minor keys
  • Rhythmic coordination with ensemble accompaniment
