More about this title

About the Composer: Bethany Main

Bethany Main

Bethany Main directs the Youth Chorus of Kansas City, a non-profit ensemble committed to removing financial barriers to choral music education in the Kansas City Metro area. She holds both her Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Music Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Conservatory of Music and Dance, where she studied conducting and pedagogy.

Main brings classroom experience from her years teaching elementary general music and directing choirs in the Olathe School District. Beyond the rehearsal hall, she is an active composer and children's book author whose original works have earned recognition, including JW Pepper's Editor's Choice distinction for "Becoming You" and "Together." She presents regularly at state and national conferences, leads honor choirs, and holds membership in the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the Kansas Music Educators Association.

Why we love this

This resource cuts through the noise of generic choir warm-up collections by offering a complete pedagogical framework built on actual classroom success. Main doesn't just provide exercises; she delivers time-tested management strategies, clear guidance on repertoire selection, and the kind of practical wisdom that comes from teaching real students in real schools. The fully developed accompaniments in MakeMusic Cloud transform every warm-up into a complete, polished musical experience rather than a bare-bones drill.

What to expect

Warm-ups become moments of genuine joy rather than obligatory vocal calisthenics. The exercises balance purposeful skill-building with playfulness, creating rehearsals that feel both focused and alive. Brain breaks and team builders weave social-emotional learning into the music-making process, building ensemble cohesion alongside musicianship.

Who it's for

This resource serves elementary and middle school choir directors, general music teachers who direct ensembles, and anyone managing multiple choirs with different age groups and experience levels. It works equally well for teachers new to the profession seeking structured guidance and veteran directors looking to refresh their rehearsal routines with contemporary, evidence-based practices.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the accompaniment variations in MakeMusic Cloud to adapt warm-ups for different vocal ranges and skill levels within a single rehearsal.
  • Use the modulation options to match warm-ups to the key of pieces your choir is currently learning, creating natural musical continuity.
  • Layer the kinesthetic components described in the book with the sung material to deepen student engagement and retention across all learning styles.

How to use it

Use this book's framework to establish consistent opening and closing routines throughout your season, creating predictable structures that allow singers to settle into focused work quickly. The brain break and team-builder sections fit naturally into rehearsals before learning new repertoire or after intensive sectional work, keeping energy and morale steady during long rehearsal blocks.

Skills your students will build

  • Vocal control and ear training through systematically designed warm-ups
  • Ensemble cohesion and trust-building via kinesthetic and collaborative games
  • Focus and attention management through structured brain breaks
  • Preparation for learning new repertoire through targeted physical and vocal warm-up sequences
  • Social-emotional awareness and classroom community development
