About the Composer: Lon Beery

Lon Beery

Lon Beery directs the choral program at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York, where his six choirs engage approximately 500 students annually. His compositions and arrangements have been published by Alfred Music, BriLee, and other major houses, with over 50 works now in circulation.

Beery's work has reached national audiences, including a TTBB composition performed by the U.S. Army Chorus at President Ronald Reagan's internment service. He has received multiple ASCAP Standard Awards for his compositions and contributed articles to the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal. Active in the choral education community, he regularly presents at state, regional, and national conferences and currently serves as Middle School Chair for New York ACDA.

Why we love this

Beery understands what middle and high school singers can actually accomplish because he works with hundreds of them every year. This piece balances an approachable musical concept with genuine artistic substance, giving your singers something meaningful to sing about without requiring advanced vocal technique. The flexible voicing options mean you can use it with nearly any mixed or treble choir configuration.

What to expect

The music conveys sincere conviction without sentimentality. There's a warmth to the harmonic language and a sense of voices joining together in common purpose, making this both a meaningful listening experience and a confidence builder for singers learning to blend across parts.

Who it's for

This piece works for middle school, high school, and youth choirs exploring themes of brotherhood and peaceful coexistence. The flexible TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB voicing makes it accessible whether your ensemble is entirely unchanged voices, mixed treble and lower voices, or fully mixed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the harmonic movement carefully during sustained sections; encourage singers to listen across parts rather than focusing only on their own line.
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to lock tempo during rehearsal, then gradually reduce reliance on it as the choir internalizes the harmonic structure.
  • Shape phrases around the text's message of unity rather than ending each phrase with a rhythmic punctuation; let the meaning carry the line.

How to use it

Program this for a concert centered on peace, brotherhood, or social awareness themes. It also serves as a strong choice for festivals or competitions where meaningful repertoire is valued alongside technical difficulty.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending and balancing across mixed or treble voice parts
  • Sustaining tone quality while holding long notes
  • Singing with textual expression and emotional authenticity
