About the Arranger: Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi

Vince Gassi has been publishing with Alfred Music since 2006, building a catalog of over 100 compositions and arrangements that bridge accessibility with musical substance. His work as a composer, arranger, conductor, and clinician has earned him recognition across North America, Europe, and Japan, with pieces regularly appearing on contest and festival programs.

Gassi holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario and studied composition and arranging at the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He completed his Ph.D. at York University in Toronto after two and a half decades teaching instrumental music at elementary and secondary levels. He remains active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician, and leads workshops on creative engagement and digital tools for music directors.

Why we love this

Gassi's arrangement transforms a Renaissance courtly dance into something fresh without losing the carol's warmth. The arc from joyous opening through reflective middle to exuberant close gives your ensemble a real emotional shape to discover, and the Grade 2 scoring lets every section feel successful.

What to expect

This arrangement captures the intimacy of a 16th century court setting, then expands it into something bright and celebratory. You'll feel the tradition of the carol, but reimagined with contemporary harmonic color and pacing.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands looking for a Christmas selection that offers variety and musicality without technical barrier. Directors can program this confidently in mixed-level ensembles and know their musicians will connect with the piece's emotional journey.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the dynamic arch clearly in the opening section so that the brief reflective moment lands with genuine contrast; don't let the tempo drop, only the intensity.
  • Balance the melody across sections during variations; this scoring likely distributes the tune, so rehearse transitions between instrumental groups to ensure smooth handoffs.
  • Bring rhythmic precision to the jubilant closing section; the energy should feel propulsive rather than rushed.

How to use it

Perfect for the middle or closing slot of a holiday concert, where it can stand on its own or pair nicely with one other carol. The moderate length (2:25) makes it ideal for programs that need a festive centerpiece without consuming your full concert time.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing across sectional melody exchanges
  • Dynamic shaping and contrast within a single piece
  • Balancing and blending when the primary tune moves between instrument groups
  • Sustaining ensemble sound through tempo changes
