About the Composer: Steve Hodges

Steve Hodges

Steve Hodges holds degrees from Western Oregon University (Bachelor of Science) and Central Washington University (Master of Music Education). Over four decades as a public school band, choir, and ensemble director, he built a composing catalog of more than 120 concert band works published through Alfred Music, along with choral arrangements issued by Staff Music and Shawnee Press.

Hodges's compositions have appeared at festivals and state conventions internationally and have been programmed by honor bands across Virginia, Iowa, Winnipeg, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and North Carolina. His music has reached television audiences through TBS and ESPN. A member of ASCAP, Hodges now lives in The Dalles, Oregon, where he continues to engage in community music alongside his wife, Teddie, and watches his grandchildren discover his own pieces in their school band programs.

Why we love this

Hodges understands what early bands need: accessible writing that doesn't sacrifice energy or musicality. Break Out delivers immediate gratification through a driving bass line and percussion work that gives every section something to play, keeping students engaged while building fundamental ensemble skills without overwhelming them technically.

What to expect

A shot of adrenaline delivered with a solid groove. The driving bass line pulls you forward while the percussion work creates momentum, and bright themes bounce through the sections so each group gets its moment to shine. It feels modern and live, like a band that knows how to play together.

Who it's for

Grade 1.5 bands and developing ensembles seeking a concert piece with genuine rock appeal and character. Directors looking for something that energizes students without extensive technical demands will find this ideal for mid-year or late-season programs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythm section (bass line and percussion) first; once they anchor the groove, the rest of the band finds its pocket more easily.
  • Shape the rock themes with dynamics marked in the score; resist the temptation to play everything loud just because it's a rock piece.
  • Balance the expanded percussion parts so they support rather than bury the melodic lines; each section should hear itself clearly.

How to use it

Program Break Out as a second-half opener to shift energy after a slower piece, or as a finale when you want the audience and ensemble to leave energized. It works well alongside light classical or traditional concert repertoire because the rock idiom provides genuine stylistic contrast.

Skills your students will build

  • Rock rhythm and groove playing (steady quarter note pulse, syncopation)
  • Balanced ensemble sound with expanded percussion section
  • Part independence (each section carries distinct melodic and rhythmic material)
  • Accurate articulation and coordination in faster passages
  • Listening and blending across contrasting instrumental colors
