Description
The inspiration came from the composers time enrolled in a Master of Music Education program at James Madison University in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The campus features many original buildings, built in the early 20th century, constructed from a local stone called "bluestone," a type of limestone mined in the surrounding area. This Grade 3 piece will appeal to middle and high school directors looking for an exciting and useful teaching tool. Written in a traditional ABA overture style, Bluestone Scenes features infectious syncopated rhythms and interesting harmonies.

About the Composer: Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan is a composer and arranger whose works have been heard at prestigious venues including the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the White House, and the gubernatorial inauguration of former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder. He earned his undergraduate degree in Music Education from Bridgewater College and completed a master's degree at James Madison University, where he later served as adjunct faculty teaching arranging and currently works as a University Supervisor.

Fagan spent 36 years as a band director in Albemarle County before transitioning to full-time university supervision and composition. His contributions to music education have earned him recognition as Central Virginia's Outstanding Middle School Teacher, an Outstanding Educator Award from Virginia's Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts, and distinction from the Piedmont Council of the Arts. He remains active as a clinician, adjudicator, and percussionist with the Charlottesville Band, where he serves as Assistant Director. A member of ASCAP, the National Band Association, and Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, he continues writing for both band and string orchestra.

Why we love this

Fagan writes with a director's pragmatism. The ABA form provides structural clarity without sacrificing musical interest, and the syncopated rhythms engage students while remaining teachable at Grade 3. The piece draws its inspiration from tangible architecture, which creates a built-in story for your program notes and gives students something concrete to visualize as they play.

What to expect

Bluestone Scenes captures the architectural charm of a college campus through music that's energetic without being frenetic. The syncopated rhythms give it forward momentum and contemporary spirit, while the traditional overture structure keeps it grounded and elegant. You're hearing both the solid construction of those limestone buildings and the vibrant life happening within them.

Who it's for

Middle and high school string orchestra directors seeking repertoire that balances accessibility with musical substance. This piece works equally well for concert programming and festival competition, offering students an early exposure to syncopation and harmonic interest without technical demands that overshadow musicality.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the syncopated rhythms as a group before sectional work. Have all players count together through the syncopated passages, then add instruments section by section to lock the feel.
  • Shape the A section with purposeful dynamics that support the harmonic movement. These interesting harmonies deserve clarity, so avoid letting dynamics flatten as sections enter.
  • Balance the middle section carefully; the B section's character shift needs to land distinctly without losing ensemble cohesion.
  • Use the return to A as an opportunity to demonstrate musical memory. Discuss how the familiar material can now sound fresh because the B section has shifted the listener's perspective.

How to use it

This piece fits naturally into a concert that balances lighter works with more substantial offerings, or it can anchor a festival program entry where its Grade 3 accessibility doesn't compromise your ensemble's musicianship. Consider pairing it with a contrasting slow work to showcase your orchestra's dynamic range, or use it as the closer to a first half, where its infectious energy leaves audiences energized.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing syncopated rhythms with precision
  • Balancing individual lines within a four-part harmonic texture
  • Shaping phrases through dynamic control rather than tempo manipulation
  • Understanding formal structure through the ABA design
  • Blending non-traditional harmonic progressions with confident intonation
