About the Composer: Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages has built an international reputation as a composer and conductor whose work spans orchestral, band, and chamber music idioms with equal facility. His compositions have been performed by ensembles at every level, from professional orchestras at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to elementary school groups, and he has received numerous honors including the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest for Love and Light.

Beyond composition, Balmages maintains an active conducting schedule with all-state, regional, university, and professional ensembles worldwide, with notable guest appearances at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, and state ASTA conferences. He holds alumni distinction from both James Madison University and the University of Miami, where he was commissioned to compose for a presidential inauguration. Currently, he serves as Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred and MakeMusic.

Why we love this

Balmages brings the infectious energy of bluegrass fiddle traditions into the concert hall without sacrificing the orchestral sophistication your ensemble can handle. The flexible instrumentation means you're not locked into a specific roster, and at Grade 3, the part writing respects the skill level while delivering genuine musical character that audiences recognize and love. A piece this engaging at this grade level with contest-ready credentials rarely appears.

What to expect

Energetic and playful, with the unmistakable swagger of bluegrass fiddle music translated into string writing. Expect dancing rhythms, bright articulation, and the kind of infectious momentum that makes audiences sit up and listen without requiring advanced technical demands.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 3 level looking for repertoire with genuine personality and cross-genre appeal. Directors who want to program something spirited and accessible, yet distinctive enough to hold an audience's attention and compete in festival settings.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody between first and second violins so the bluegrass idiom stays bright but doesn't overshadow the rhythmic drive underneath.
  • Lock the articulation in the lower strings and cello pizzicato lines—bluegrass style depends on rhythmic precision and rhythmic clarity in accompaniment figures.
  • Maintain a steady, dance-like pulse throughout; these reels thrive on forward momentum rather than expressive rubato.
  • Let the dialogue between string sections breathe when the texture opens up, especially if you're using the flexible instrumentation to feature smaller groups.

How to use it

This works equally well as a lively opener for a concert or festival round, a mid-program palette cleanser between heavier works, or a final encore that leaves the audience grinning. The novelty appeal and accessible difficulty make it a smart choice for community performances where you want to showcase your ensemble's versatility.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing articulate pizzicato and arco passages with rhythmic precision
  • Reading and executing bluegrass-influenced rhythmic figures and syncopation
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment in a transparent texture
  • Adapting to flexible instrumentation and adjusting balance across different lineup configurations
  • Understanding and performing fiddle-style ornamentation and phrasing
