More about this title

About the Composer: Adrian B. Sims

Adrian B. Sims

Adrian B. Sims was born in Seattle in 2000 and developed his musical voice through formative years in Maryland, where he studied composition and trombone under some of the region's finest musicians. His work has garnered recognition at major venues including The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, earned spots on the Bandworld Top 100 List, and won awards from the Maryland Music Educators Association and Make Music Young Composers Contest. As both a performer and creator, Sims has conducted his own works across Maryland schools and performed as a trombonist in orchestral, jazz, and band settings, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Currently pursuing dual degrees in Music Education and Composition at The University of Maryland, Sims studies bass trombone with Matthew Guilford of the National Symphony Orchestra and composition with Dr. Robert Gibson. He credits mentors including his high school band directors Christopher Gnagey and Cindy Stevenson, as well as composer Brian Balmages, with shaping his artistic development.

Why we love this

Beyond Reach delivers the cinematic sweep and narrative arc that Grade 3 ensembles crave without sacrificing musical substance. The harmonic sophistication and melodic generosity reward careful rehearsal, while the inherent drama of the concept keeps student musicians engaged and motivated across the full 3:30 runtime. This is a piece that builds genuine musicianship while fueling the excitement that makes students want to be in band.

What to expect

You are watching brave characters advance into an unknown danger. The music pulses with anticipation and dread, then swells with defiant hope, shifting unexpectedly through harmonic corridors before breaking into triumphant victory. It feels like a movie score because it tells a complete emotional story without a single word.

Who it's for

Grade 3 concert bands ready to program ambitious repertoire that feels both accessible and genuinely sophisticated. Directors seeking a piece with cinematic personality that resonates with student musicians and audiences alike will find a natural fit here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the heroic melodic lines with clear dynamic architecture; the piece's emotional arc depends on restraint in quieter passages and commitment to the peak moments rather than playing every section at full intensity.
  • Balance the harmonic twists against rhythmic clarity in the ensemble; when Sims moves through unexpected chords, rhythmic precision keeps listeners oriented rather than lost.
  • Use the contest/festival context as rehearsal motivation: this piece is built for adjudication and thrives when sections understand the narrative they're telling.

How to use it

Program Beyond Reach as a concert centerpiece that commands attention without requiring thematic pairing; its self-contained narrative and Grade 3 accessibility make it an ideal anchor for festivals or honor band performances. The 3:30 duration and inherent drama also make it a strong choice for concert openers where you want to signal that the evening will be serious music-making.

Skills your students will build

  • Interpreting harmonic color and unexpected chord progressions
  • Building dynamic control across extended melodic lines
  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity during harmonic shifts
  • Ensemble balance when primary melodies migrate across sections
  • Connecting to programmatic content and narrative through musical choices
