More about this title

About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney started piano lessons at four years old and built her foundation through rigorous classical training. While studying at North Texas State University, she developed her skills as a choral accompanist, an experience that directly shaped her compositional voice for ensembles across multiple genres and instrumentation.

Courtney has built a prolific career as a composer and arranger, with recognition that includes multiple ASCAP Plus Awards. She studied under Dove Award-winning Mark Hayes in 2002 and 2004, and by 2009 had published 100 works; that number has grown to over 350 titles across choral, piano, handbells, and vocal music. She maintains an active practice teaching piano and composition to students of all ages while composing full time from her home in Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney's extensive background as both a classical pianist and choral accompanist gives her an intuitive grasp of what works under a singer's voice. The recorded accompaniment option means rehearsals move forward even when the piano chair is empty, freeing your accompanist to focus on balancing sections or allowing you to conduct with full attention.

What to expect

The music carries a contemporary sensibility grounded in clear harmonic language and straightforward melodic lines. It invites singers to engage with the text while maintaining focus on clean ensemble blend.

Who it's for

Choirs at the middle school through adult community level will find accessible, singable writing in this title. The recorded accompaniment option makes it practical for groups with limited accompanist availability or those building independence in pitch awareness.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the recorded accompaniment as both a rehearsal tool and a performance option; many directors find it especially valuable for building confidence in newer singers before the accompanist joins full ensemble runs.
  • Balance the piano part carefully during early rehearsals so singers hear the harmonic foundation clearly without the accompaniment overwhelming the choral sound.
  • If using the digital audio in performance, check your playback system well before concert day; a backup device or file is good insurance.

How to use it

This works well as a standalone piece for a secular concert or integrated into a mixed program where you want something with modern appeal that doesn't demand extended rehearsal time. The recorded accompaniment also makes it a strong choice for recordings or virtual performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with recorded accompaniment (listening, steady pulse, ensemble interdependence)
  • Blend and balance in contemporary choral writing
  • Clear diction in secular text
