Description
It has hints of Africa, as well as the Caribbean. Certainly, Bethlehem Hallelu has its roots in the African Diaspora. It's rhythmic and melodic, in a walking tempo wich anchors the piece as it builds through several rising modulations. A part for two drums is included in the publication and Jay Althouse lists no less than eight performances options in his Performance Notes, including voices with drum and bass. Tailor it to your needs and the talents of your students, or use the "world music" SoundTrax CD.

About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumni recipient. Early in his career, he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. Since then, he has established himself as one of the most prolific composers for choirs, with over 800 works in print across all levels of difficulty.

Althouse's contributions extend beyond composition into pedagogical writing and collaborative projects. He has co-written children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, compiled respected vocal solo collections including Folk Songs for Solo Singers, and authored The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers alongside other classroom resources. He is an ASCAP writer member and consistent recipient of the ASCAP Special Award for his compositions. Based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, Althouse has remained active in musical communities, serving on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse gives you genuine flexibility here. Eight different performance options allow you to shape this piece around what your choir can deliver, whether that means adding percussion players, keeping it voices-only, or layering in the optional accompaniment. The African Diaspora influences and Caribbean rhythmic elements feel fresh for holiday programming without abandoning the sacred context, and the walking tempo with rising modulations creates real forward momentum that your singers will feel building naturally.

What to expect

The piece carries rhythmic warmth and movement rooted in African and Caribbean traditions, creating a holiday setting that feels expansive rather than confined to a single cultural context. As successive key changes lift the music upward, the walking tempo prevents anything precious or overwrought from entering; instead, the effect is grounded, celebratory, and genuinely joyful.

Who it's for

This octavo serves intermediate to advanced high school choirs and adult community ensembles looking for sacred Christmas music with global flavor. The flexible drum parts and multiple performance options make it accessible to choirs of varying instrumental resources and vocal blend.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the walking tempo as your foundation. The rhythmic anchor it provides matters more than pushing for speed; lock this in during early rehearsals and the modulations will feel like they're carrying the piece, not rushing it.
  • Experiment with the eight performance options during staging and sound checks if you're adding drums. Try the piece both with and without percussion to hear how each arrangement changes the character, then decide what serves your concert best.
  • Balance the rising modulations carefully through dynamics and diction. Each key change should feel like a natural lift, not a jolt. Crisper articulation in each new key helps singers feel the progression without forcing it.

How to use it

Pair this with more traditional sacred repertoire to show how Christmas music can draw from world traditions while maintaining spiritual depth. Its rhythmic energy and shorter length (12 pages) make it ideal as a program closer or centerpiece, where the multiple modulations and optional percussion create a memorable send-off for your audience.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing rising key modulations
  • Maintaining steady pulse and rhythmic precision in walking tempo
  • Balancing choral blend while adding unpitched percussion accompaniment
  • Adapting performance approach based on available vocal and instrumental resources
  • Connecting African Diaspora musical traditions with sacred choral writing
