More about this title

About the Composer: Emily Crocker

Emily Crocker

Emily Crocker spent 15 years teaching music across all levels in Texas public schools before transitioning to music publishing in 1989. She rose to Vice President of Choral Publications at Hal Leonard, where she spent 28 years developing choral resources before retiring in 2017. During her publishing career, she also founded and directed the Milwaukee Children's Choir from 1994 to 2009 and established the Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee from 2009 to 2015, earning the title of Director Emeritus in 2019.

Crocker's compositions have been performed internationally, and her reputation rests largely on her skill in crafting choral music that serves both pedagogical and artistic purposes. Now based in Fort Worth, Texas, she continues composing and championing music education and the arts in her community.

Why we love this

Crocker's gift for accessible yet sophisticated writing means your singers encounter genuine musical ideas without unnecessary complexity. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility to rehearse independently of a pianist, and the concert and festival designation confirms this piece stands up to real performance scrutiny.

What to expect

The title and the composer's track record suggest a piece built on warmth and connection rather than drama or complexity. Expect accessible melodies and transparent scoring that lets singers experience musical satisfaction while performing together.

Who it's for

High school through community choirs will find this work rewarding for both rehearsal and performance. The piece suits directors programming concert or festival appearances and wanting a selection that showcases solid choral writing without excessive technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the digital accompaniment track to establish accurate tempos and harmonic foundation during sectional rehearsals; singers often find their parts more quickly when the harmonic context is present from the start.
  • Pay attention to text underlay and syllable stress; Crocker's writing typically aligns melodic contour with textual meaning, so clarity of diction directly shapes how the music communicates.
  • Balance solo and tutti sections carefully, since this piece likely features moments where individual voices or voice parts emerge; rehearse these transitions explicitly so they feel organic rather than abrupt.

How to use it

This piece fits naturally into a spring or fall concert focused on uplifting secular repertoire, or pair it with other Alfred Choral Designs selections for a program that highlights contemporary choral craftsmanship. It also serves well as a festival entry where accessibility and solid musicianship matter equally.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble balance and blend within a secular choral setting
  • Text expression and connection between lyrical content and musical phrase shape
  • Secure part-singing with recorded harmonic support
