About the Composer: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings three decades of instrumental music teaching and performance experience to his compositions and arrangements. A trumpet performer who worked with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, he holds degrees in Music Education through the doctoral level and has conducted clinics across North America and internationally.

With over 600 published works spanning concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band, Bullock has shaped music education curricula as co-author of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method. He served seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department for four years, and has been an ASCAP member since 1980.

Why we love this

Four contrasting pieces at this accessible level give you genuine programming flexibility without sacrificing musical interest. Each piece works independently, so you can perform them separately throughout the year or combine them into a polished concert experience. The writing respects both student capability and conductor preparation time, making this kit genuinely practical for teachers managing multiple ensembles.

What to expect

Four distinct musical moods arrive in one package. 'Lightly Row' dances with simplicity; 'Cool Blues' settles into a relaxed groove; 'Waltzing with the Stars' carries the elegance of ballroom tradition; 'Petite March' marches with character and directness. Together they showcase what young ensembles can accomplish across multiple genres.

Who it's for

Beginning band directors teaching Grade 0.5 students who need reliable, musically rewarding repertoire that doesn't demand extensive rehearsal time. These pieces work equally well for school concerts, festival performances, or classroom demonstrations of musical style and instrumentation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line in 'Lightly Row' by ensuring all sections understand which part carries the tune; rotate the lead among instruments to build confidence and engagement.
  • Give 'Cool Blues' space to breathe; resist the urge to push the tempo and let students feel the relaxed swing feel.
  • Shape the waltz phrases in 'Waltzing with the Stars' with clear downbeats and subtle dynamic shaping to bring out the character of each section.
  • Approach 'Petite March' with crisp articulation and clean releases; mark entrances in parts clearly so young musicians stay together through directional changes.

How to use it

Open your autumn concert with 'Lightly Row' to showcase melody and ensemble balance, then move into 'Cool Blues' for a tempo shift that holds audience attention. Program 'Waltzing with the Stars' mid-show for elegance, and close with 'Petite March' for a strong finish. Alternatively, select individual pieces to perform at different concerts throughout the year as student confidence grows.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining consistent ensemble tone across contrasting tempos and styles
  • Precision in articulation (legato and staccato passages)
  • Listening to and balancing multiple melodic and harmonic lines
  • Intonation awareness in simple harmonic progressions
  • Quick style transitions (march, waltz, blues feel)
  • Marking and following conductor cues in multiple pieces
