About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of hands-on experience to his work as a composer and arranger. A trumpet performer who has worked with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, as well as touring dance bands across the country, he understands what sounds good on the stage and what works in rehearsal. He holds degrees in Music Education including a doctorate, and taught instrumental music in public school classrooms for 20 years while serving as assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music.

With over 600 published works across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band, Bullock has established himself as a reliable voice for educators seeking practical, playable arrangements. He co-authored the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributed arrangements to Music Expressions, Alfred's comprehensive school music curriculum. His work has taken him to clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and England, and he has been an ASCAP member since 1980.

Why we love this

Bullock understands that first holiday concerts require arrangements that are accessible without sacrificing musical coherence. These five pieces sit comfortably for Grade 1 ensembles while maintaining the festive character audiences expect, and bundling them together into one conductor score eliminates the logistical burden of juggling separate octavos and parts. The "kit" approach means you have everything you need for a complete, polished program without extra expense or preparation.

What to expect

These arrangements capture the warmth and familiarity of holiday favorites without overwhelming young players. The music has a straightforward, singing quality that lets students experience the joy of these melodies as an ensemble, with parts that sit naturally under student hands and voices.

Who it's for

Band directors preparing their first or second-year concert band for a holiday program will find these arrangements ideal for students still developing basic ensemble skills and reading fluency. This kit works especially well for schools where budget constraints make purchasing individual octavos difficult or for directors who want to program a complete concert from a single, coordinated source.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody between sections carefully in the ensemble pieces; these Grade 1 arrangements rely on clear melodic lines to keep younger players oriented, especially during full-band passages.
  • Take "Up On the Housetop" and "Jingle Bells" at a moderate tempo that allows beginners to execute clean articulation without rushing or dragging.
  • Let "Silent Night" breathe with a steady, lyrical pace; resist the urge to slow it too much, as younger ensembles often lose security in very slow tempos.
  • Use the contrast between the simpler accompaniment figures and the melody to help lower voices and rhythm section players feel their contribution to the overall texture.

How to use it

Use this kit to build a standalone holiday concert that feels complete and polished despite the Grade 1 instrumentation and skill level. The five contrasting pieces (three upbeat secular favorites, one reverent standard, and a closing wish) create a natural arc that works well for community holiday programs, winter assemblies, or end-of-semester concerts where a thematic focus on holiday music is appropriate.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading simple melodic lines in treble and bass clefs
  • Executing clean articulation in short, repeating figures
  • Maintaining steady tempo and rhythm in ensemble settings
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment within a band texture
  • Responding to conductor gestures for phrasing and dynamic shaping
