About the Composer: Joel Spineti

Joel Spineti

Joel Spineti brings seventeen years of classroom experience across elementary, middle, and high school levels to his work as a composer and educator. He currently directs both the jazz and concert bands at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School in Connecticut, where he applies his deep knowledge of ensemble pedagogy to compositions that challenge and engage young musicians.

Spineti's musical foundation combines formal study in composition at Central Connecticut State University with years of jazz piano training in New York and extensive experience as a music director and performer in musical theater across the country. His compositional voice draws from all these threads: concert band and jazz band works, choral music, and theater scores that reflect a composer who understands what works on stage and in the rehearsal room.

Why we love this

Spineti writes with a clear sense of narrative and character without descending into saccharine territory. The piece captures the wonder of a fairy tale through genuinely inventive orchestration and rhythmic language that sits comfortably in young hands while maintaining musical sophistication. A concert band director at heart, Spineti knows exactly how to balance accessibility with the kind of engaging musical ideas that make rehearsals rewarding.

What to expect

Awaken the Giant unfolds like a storybook told in music, all curiosity and wonder. The textures shimmer and shift as the young boy ventures toward his encounter, creating an atmospheric quality that feels both magical and intimate, with the rhythmic playfulness suggesting the lightness of adventure rather than danger.

Who it's for

Grade 2.5 concert bands with solid fundamentals and the maturity to shape a narrative arc. The piece works well for ensembles ready to move beyond basic technical exercises into genuine musical storytelling, and it appeals to young musicians who respond to programmatic content and imaginative scenarios.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the whimsical tone early by experimenting with articulation and phrasing in sectionals; the lilting rhythms need clarity and lift to sparkle, not heaviness.
  • Draw attention to the texture changes throughout the piece. Highlight which instruments carry the melody in each section during your first read-through so players understand how the orchestration tells the story.
  • Balance the woodwind and brass colors carefully. This piece relies on colorful combinations rather than volume; encourage players to listen across the band rather than within their own sections.
  • Take time with any accompanied cadenzas or solo passages; the story unfolds through these moments, and young musicians benefit from understanding their dramatic purpose.

How to use it

This piece anchors a young people's concert beautifully, especially if you frame the program around story or imagination themes. It also works as the centerpiece of a concert that mixes longer narrative works with shorter concert openers, giving your band a substantial musical statement without the demands of a full-length composition.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing texture and blend across mixed instrumentation
  • Shaping phrasal lines with light articulation and dynamic control
  • Reading and executing rhythmic figures that prioritize musicality over mechanical precision
  • Interpreting programmatic intent and sustaining character throughout a composition
  • Listening and responding to changes in orchestration while maintaining ensemble cohesion
