More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 choral works for singers of all ages. His children's musicals, vocal resources, and sight-singing materials are performed by choirs worldwide, and his work as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator has taken him to honor choirs and all-state ensembles across the country and beyond. Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, and he performs as a tenor with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir.

Brian Fisher collaborates with Beck on this project, bringing his expertise in arranging popular music for young singers. Together, they have created a musical that balances accessibility with genuine entertainment value, drawing on Fisher's gift for making familiar songs work brilliantly in educational settings.

Why we love this

This musical captures the energy and humor of mid-century pop culture while keeping the actual staging and vocal demands manageable for middle grades. The 2-part voicing means your singers stay engaged without getting lost in complex harmonies, and the built-in accompaniment recording lets you rehearse independently from the piano. Beck and Fisher's script lands every joke, and directors consistently report that students beg to rehearse these songs.

What to expect

At the Bandstand! bursts with the optimism and energy of 1950s pop culture, complete with a dance competition, rivalry, and the kind of humor that makes middle schoolers laugh without cringing. The familiar songs transport performers and audiences to a simpler era, while the script keeps everything fresh and contemporary in how it builds character and conflict. From the opening number to the final curtain, the show maintains a breakneck pace that keeps everyone invested.

Who it's for

Directors programming a full musical for grades 3-8 will find this show perfectly calibrated for that age range. Choirs with limited rehearsal time benefit from the pre-recorded accompaniment and straightforward 2-part writing. Schools looking to balance genuine musical learning with pure fun will recognize this as a rare piece that delivers both without compromise.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the comedic timing with your actors; the punch lines work only when the pacing snaps. Have your cast practice the spoken moments as deliberately as the sung ones.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish steady tempos during early rehearsals, then gradually transition to live piano so your singers learn to listen rather than rely on the recording.
  • Divide rehearsal time between full-cast run-throughs and sectional work on the '50s songs, which sit at slightly different comfortable ranges depending on the tune.
  • Stage movement matters for this show's comedy. Even simple blocking (positioning Cindy downstage when her rival makes an entrance, for example) multiplies the humor and holds audience attention.

How to use it

This is a complete-in-itself musical perfect for a spring concert, end-of-year celebration, or full evening program. Many directors use it as a standalone spring musical separate from their holiday productions, or as the centerpiece of a pops or family-friendly concert where it anchors the program with a full theatrical production while lighter choral pieces open or close the evening.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in 2-part harmony with simple but effective arrangement textures
  • Sustaining rhythmic accuracy in doo-wop and rock-and-roll idioms (particularly the syncopation in Sh-Boom and Shake, Rattle and Roll)
  • Connecting text delivery to comedic timing and stage acting
  • Interpreting period-appropriate phrasing in '50s pop songs
  • Following a recorded accompaniment with independence and confidence
