About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell grew up in North Carolina without a piano in his home, yet practiced for an hour daily at his aunt and uncle's house starting at age 12. After his parents purchased a piano a year later, he began composing in high school, drawing inspiration from literature and writing pieces for his school choir's radio broadcasts. He studied music in college and didn't formally study composition until his senior year at East Carolina University.

After teaching in a small town, Hartsell reconnected with his passion for composing in the early 1980s following a meeting with Lynn Freeman Olson, which led him to approach publishers. His first publication with Alfred, the three-book series Something Special (1990), launched a prolific career spanning more than 60 published collections and solos. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hartsell remains active as a teacher, composer, accompanist, clinician, adjudicator, and church musician.
