Description
This exciting festival work fuses elements of antiphonal music with contemporary rhythms and harmonies. About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens

William Owens has spent decades writing music that beginning and intermediate bands can actually play with confidence. A VanderCook College of Music graduate and 30-year band director in Texas, he understands the gap between what student musicians need to learn and what keeps them engaged. Since 1993, he has composed over 300 works for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensembles, many of which have become staples on required music lists across North America.

Owens's approach to composition is rooted in practicality. He knows how to balance clarity of purpose with genuine musical interest, which is why his works appear in educational texts and continue to be performed at festivals and contests nationwide. His contributions to the field have been recognized through commissions from major organizations, ASCAP membership, and a Meritorious Achievement Award from the Texas Bandmasters Association. He now resides in Fort Worth with his wife Georgia, splitting his time between traveling and indulging his passion for Chevrolet Corvettes.

Why we love this

Owens builds antiphonal writing into a piece that feels contemporary rather than archaic. The call-and-response structure gives every section of your band a moment to shine, which matters enormously for keeping young players invested. The countermelodies that emerge create genuine musical sophistication without requiring virtuosic technical chops, and the full-ensemble climax rewards everyone equally.

What to expect

Antiphon opens with infectious energy, then settles into a conversation where different voices of the band trade phrases back and forth. As countermelodies weave in and out, the texture thickens organically until the opening idea returns with full force, feeling both familiar and newly powerful.

Who it's for

Grade 1 concert bands preparing for festivals and contests will find exactly what they need here. The antiphonal structure engages all sections of the ensemble without overwhelming them, and the contemporary harmonies keep the sound fresh and current.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the clarity of the antiphonal exchanges by isolating each responding section during rehearsal. Have one group play while others listen, then swap roles, so students hear exactly what they're answering.
  • Shape the introduction with forward momentum; this opening establishes the energy that carries through the call-and-response sections and prevents the piece from feeling episodic.
  • Balance the countermelodies when they emerge. Mark your score to show which voices carry primary material and which provide harmonic support, so the texture doesn't muddy.
  • Build toward the return of the opening statement with gradual dynamic growth across the ensemble. The accumulation of voices should feel inevitable, not forced.

How to use it

This piece works beautifully as a mid-concert selection that bridges lighter fare with more ambitious repertoire. Its festival-ready energy makes it a smart choice for spring contests, and the antiphonal writing can serve as an accessible entry point into more complex formal structures later in the year.

Skills your students will build

  • Responding to ensemble cues in call-and-response texture
  • Maintaining musical shape while passing primary material between sections
  • Balancing primary melodies with countermelodies in the same dynamic level
  • Reading and executing clean ensemble articulation during antiphonal passages
  • Understanding how traditional musical forms (antiphonal music) connect to contemporary harmonic language
