About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse studied Music Education and Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he later received the Distinguished Alumni award. His career spans composition, music publishing administration, and advocacy within the music industry; he served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America and holds membership in ASCAP, earning their Special Award multiple times for his contributions to standard choral repertoire.

Althouse has written over 800 choral works performed across the English-speaking world, ranging from pieces for elementary choirs to advanced ensembles. Beyond composition, he has compiled vocal solo collections, co-authored influential pedagogical texts including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers, and created classroom resources on music literacy and composer study. His collaborative work with his wife, Sally K. Albrecht, includes children's musicals and I Hear America Singing, performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.

Why we love this

Althouse builds this piece on a foundation of melodic clarity and emotional directness, giving every voice part a moment to shine while maintaining excellent blend and balance. The interweaving of an original Gloria melody with the beloved Angels We Have Heard On High creates a fresh take on familiar material that feels neither derivative nor disorienting to singers or listeners. The optional brass and percussion parts elevate the sound without demanding additional rehearsal time if you choose to go unaccompanied.

What to expect

The piece pulses with quiet conviction from the start, anchored by that driving Gloria melody that feels both ancient and immediate. As Angels We Have Heard On High enters, the texture opens into something celebratory and expansive, full of the kind of joy that comes from blending voices together in purposeful harmony.

Who it's for

This octavo works for developing and intermediate choirs across middle school, high school, and adult community settings. SAB voicing makes it accessible to ensembles with limited male singers while maintaining musical substance, and Althouse's straightforward harmonic language supports singers building confidence in part independence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the opening Gloria melody carefully so it reads as a cohesive statement rather than a solo line; consider subtle dynamic shaping to guide listeners through the phrase.
  • Treat the transition into Angels We Have Heard On High as a moment of textural and harmonic arrival; slight flexibility in tempo here rewards the harmonic movement.
  • When the two melodies intertwine, ensure clear vowel unification within each voice part so the counterpoint remains transparent rather than muddy.
  • If using the SoundPax instrumental parts, rehearse the choir separately first so singers own the piece independently before adding the accompaniment layer.

How to use it

Position this as your seasonal showpiece where you want substance alongside familiarity. It pairs well alongside a more meditative sacred work, letting this one's spirited character provide contrast and closure to a thematic section. The optional instrumentation lets you scale the performance to your resources without compromising the musical impact.

Skills your students will build

  • Part independence in SAB texture with overlapping melodic lines
  • Harmonic awareness when two distinct melodies sound simultaneously
  • Blend and balance of mixed voicing in contemporary sacred style
  • Musical phrasing across extended melodic statements
  • Confidence with familiar material adapted in fresh harmonic contexts
