About the Composer: Carol Matz

Carol Matz

Carol Matz brings decades of classroom experience to her compositions and arrangements. A piano teacher who has worked with students across all levels, she has authored, composed, and arranged more than 300 published works and led teaching workshops in the United States, Canada, England, New Zealand, and Australia. Her training in composition, arranging, and orchestration at the University of Miami informs her approach to writing for young pianists.

Matz's output spans multiple ensembles and genres, from orchestra and jazz big band to brass quintet and string quartet. She is particularly recognized for her Famous & Fun series through Alfred Music. Her studio work with Miami-area recording artists has deepened her understanding of arrangement and musical communication across different styles.

Why we love this

Matz crafts patriotic material that sounds genuinely stirring without relying on obvious clichés. The piece gives late elementary pianists a chance to play something with real emotional stakes, making them feel the significance of what they're performing rather than simply executing notes on a page.

What to expect

The piece captures something earnest and hopeful. Its melody carries weight and intention, supported by harmonies that feel both accessible and substantial, creating the sense of reaching toward something meaningful.

Who it's for

This solo works well for late elementary pianists ready to explore expressive playing and musical storytelling. It suits students who respond to repertoire with a clear sense of purpose and pride.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody with clear phrase breathing. Mark where you'll lift slightly to let each musical thought complete before the next one begins.
  • Balance the accompaniment so the right hand melody projects. This patriotic material deserves to be heard.
  • Listen for moments where the harmony supports an emotional swell. Use subtle pedal changes or dynamic shifts to let those moments breathe.
  • Play with conviction. Patriotic music asks for commitment and clarity in your touch.

How to use it

Use this as a standalone recital piece for students who want to program something beyond classical or folk traditions. It also works well in concert groupings that highlight American composers or patriotic themes, perhaps paired with choral selections or orchestral arrangements of similar material.

Skills your students will build
