Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745, 1799), stands as one of the most accomplished and influential musicians of the late 18th century. Born in Guadeloupe to an enslaved mother and French plantation owner, he overcame extraordinary obstacles to become a virtuoso violinist, master fencer, accomplished conductor, and prolific composer whose works rivaled those of his European contemporaries.

De Saint-Georges spent most of his career in Paris, where he gained recognition as a performer and eventually led the Concert des Amateurs, one of the city's most prestigious ensembles. His compositional output includes symphonies, concertos, string quartets, and operas that showcase elegant melody, sophisticated harmonic language, and the stylistic hallmarks of the Classical era.
